I'm setting BBS Ameracaunas tonight! I'm excited, but cautious. I haven't had good luck with shipped eggs.

Number of chicks/ens you really plan on having... really..

My coop can house 6 standards comfortably. I planned on 4 hens through the winter, 1 was mean, so I have 3. I planned on getting 4 more hens in the spring and getting rid of one of my bantams, but both bantams are being kinda snotty, and are behind on 'rent' so I may get rid of both of them...

Ordered first babies from Ideal (Update pg 11 PICTURES!)

I have had a hard time with shipped eggs too. I ordered 8 banty chicks from Ideal last summer, and they included 6 standard BR packing peanuts. The banties did fine. Good luck with your new babies.

    Gourmet Blacks ?

I think they are a type of meat bird, like the Freedom Ranger. They don't grow as fast as the Cornish x, but faster than a 'regular' chicken.

how dangerous are cats to chickens

Our neighbor has over 2 dozen cats that regularly come over to our yard. They don't bother the chickens, even the bantams.

So bummed out.... after 18 days

The same thing happened to me the last time I bought from someone here. After 18 days, zero develpoment in any of the eggs. I was so bummed at having wasted all that time, and it was my last hatch until spring, and I really wanted that breed. I feel your pain. Good luck with the brown eggs...

An Omnivore's Dilemma thread (the book by Michael Pollan)

I listened to it on CD a year ago. I had already had chickens, so it didn't influence me either way. I had already been buying the vast majority of my food locally and supporting farmers whose farming practices I like. I had already read "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" "Coming Home to Eat" "This...

Anyone putting eggs in the bator tonight?

I'm with you. I'm incubating local mixed breed eggs just to get my mojo back. I just tried to incubate shipped eggs for the first time... every one appeared to be infertile. I'm so mad, I wasted 18 days turning clear eggs because I was sure I was missing something. Nope. All clear. Wish me...

    It Was A Comb-ectomy!!!!

I'm sorry for your little hen's comb. How awful, and absurd! I have read on here that pain killers with 'caine' in them are harmful to chickens. Maybe someone more knowledgeable will back this up. Best wishes for her speedy recovery.
