I have had to do the subtraction a few times because every clutch had its share of roosters. I give them a good home for ~18 weeks then I attempt to sell them, then they become stew.
I know its wrong, and a 5-year-old rooster is on the back nine, however, I am leaning on subtracting the 2...
Thanks for the replies, all are very helpful.
I dont feel it will ever go back to the 3 roosters coexisting in the same flock.
Its hard to see your first rooster being dethroned. And I agree he will never regain his seat because of his injury and age.
Truth is, his offspring are very good...
I started raising chickens 5 years ago when I rescued a RIR rooster.
He has sired many clutches and 2 of his male offspring are part of my current flock of 38 chickens.
Henry (Alpha Rooster), and my original rooster was injured when he attacked my son. I isolated him from the flock to...
for the last two years my RIR rooster and EE have had 8 pullets. 7 have been red 1 of the eight is a black sheep. Would this be some recessive trait?
I attached pictures of the rooster, mommy hen, typical red offspring, and the dark mix.
I went from 5x10 to 10x10.
The design just happened, but I do like the high/low coop design. In the addition, I added 2 5x12 closeable vents, a 14x21 window, and the 26x26 skylight that I modified to also vent.
Ventilation appears to be working well.
The area has to be more comfortable...
I like your weakest link theory, makes sense.. And of course the highest perch is where all the birds want to go. I will look to modify my perches. Thanks for your input.
When did I say I was going to put 55 birds in a coop? That reference was in regards to the chicken run area. You should attempt to build a friendly community, not salty know it alls. I built an awkward tall chicken coop 3 years ago when I was starting with chickens. It was based on me being...
Thank you for the responses. I just wanted to stress that the chickens only sleep in the coop. My run has a roof and I enclose the side with plastic in the cold months. The only time my birds are in the coop during the day is when they are laying eggs. I feel this may be a slightly different...
I live in northern Illinois. I currently have 24 chickens living in this coop for the last year and 1/2 ...I guess I should not add any more then :)
I do deep litter system in my coop that I believe helps cushion their descent from the perches.
