Welcome to We have 6 chickens born in mid April 2010, 4 golden comet girls - Sunny, Rainbow, Gem and Elli, the last two got to split 'gemelli' (Italian for twins) because we couldn't tell them apart before they feathered out. We also have two straight run barred rocks, Me is apparently a roo...

    Will they share?

Mine 5 share a 1 foot by 4 foot nest box, 4 lay in one end and 1 in the opposite one. Always in the same spot. I can tell because my only barred rock girl lays a light pink brown egg and the golden comet girls all lay darker golden brown eggs in the opposite side of the nest box

    Can my hens be "OVER-SEXED"?

Thanks, I'll see if I can figure out if they're fertile or not. He is a sweetheart and even if he _was- asexual I think he makes his ladies happy, they do keep close to him while free ranging.

    Can my hens be "OVER-SEXED"?

OK now I have to ask. My chickens are about 18 weeks. 4 out of 5 girls are laying, only for 1 to two weeks, but still. They all squat for me, I don't see them do it for the rooster when I'm around, and I have never seen him try to mount any of them. The rooster IS a rooster, he's big and pretty...

Noticed big growth on young roo's neck

Two days since discovery and no change in any way. No seepage, no reddening of the skin, no change in activity level. Unfortunately the scabbed area is the same size too. Reading all these posts about bumblefoot made me wonder if there was an infection inside the lump, but when I cleanded it...

Noticed big growth on young roo's neck

OK, I tried soaking it and cleaning it but there wasn't much dirt or dried in stuff that could come off. The lump is pretty firm to the touch. It is not warm and the surrounding skin isn't red or pink - it looks healthy, apart from the nasty bump thing that is. The crater isn't shallow, but it...

Noticed big growth on young roo's neck

Today our little roo (4 months old) had a patch of feathers on the side of his neck that looked like they had dried in blood on them. I picked him up and looked closer and saw this big pink bump on the side of his neck, about the size of a nickel and standing out. At the base of is were some...

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

Our Eggplant's first production run: Not a huge first egg, the hand is my four year old's, everyone got to take a turn holding it. And this is Phoebe, 4 months old and now a layer of eggs, her proud owner, 10 years old and THE EGG!

    Waiting for the first egg...

Our Barred Rock pullet layed her first egg yesterday. ( ) She was born April 12 or 13, and her comb turned red a few weeks ago. She laid her second egg today and we were right outside watching her scratch around in the nest box and then come out proud as can be The rooster on the other hand...

How much did you spend building your coop/run?

Now that it's done we have put close to $200 into our 5x4 (with an external 1x4 nestbox) coop and 8x8 mini run. Mini because the run is only 28 inches high. The measurements on the coop were adjusted to what we already had laying around, and I got the window, some trim, roofing material and...

Small run - How to run the welded wire

What I need: A small picket fence run that the chicks can access at will when we're not home to free range them. What I have so far: I put together 4 sections of dog ear picket fence, 24 inches high, 8 foot in length. (Goodness does it take time to do! First cut everything, let the lumber dry...

    What are your rooster's names?

Our Barred Rock boy's name is 'Me'. He got the name before we knew he was a boy, but it fits him. His personality is very 'Semper I' , he's the center of the universe

    Freecycle comes through, AGAIN!

Free is good! I just got home with 140 free Craigslist fence boards. A nice guy was putting up a 4 foot fence made with 6 foot fence boards, the 2 extra feet are just what I needed for the chicks picket fence *happy*

Here's what came out of my latest power tool fix

Well, I will not be taking up roofing as a career, but I got it done and don't think it turned out too shabby for a first try. It would have been easier with more stud support under the plywood roof sheeting so I'd actually have something to get the nails stuck to. And if I had a right sized...

A beginners attempt at coop and run

Oh, how neat! Good job! I have been thinking about making a small picket fence run for around the chick's house so they'll get outdoor time even when we're not at home to free range them. I do prefer the look of the square board tops on the fence but how well do you think the picket fence...
