I lost a couple bird last week and am now down to single 4 year old hen. She does not seem to miss her sisters, but I think she should have some company. We dont eat as many eggs as we use to so I would like to just add two more hens. I seen other posts that lead me to believe it might...
I am looking to add an automated door to my chicken pen. At this point I do not want it to auto open just close at night. I am thinking about having a simple guillotine style door that is pulled up and hooked to a pin or something to let them out. At night a 12V timer and a remote door...
Pretty cool setup, good idea to use a cutting board for the door. I got a couple questions, what did you use for the locking pegs, and can you confirm the lock works just by gravity. How hard was it to find the pivot point for the locks, and hints or advice to others trying to duplicate it...
thanks Shady
So you can keep multiple roos together, but it depend on the mix. Keep the hens out of line of sight to keep them inline.
When they are "working" do they stay working with the hens for a few days or just for the day?
Do you allow your hens to free range or are they always in a...
This is my first batch of chicks so it could been sick and I had not noticed. It does not seem sick and I see it muscles in to get food so I was just think a slow grower. The fuzz growing longer seemed odd which got me wondering.
Glenda,
I had seen somewhere saying you can keep multiple roos together and put them in one at a time with the hens. Have you tried this approach and does it prevent fighting?
I have one chick(6 wks old) that did not feather out like it's siblings. It has a few feathers and the fluff seems to be growing longer. It is a lot smaller than the rest as well, but I see it eating and drinking.
Has anyone seen this before?
Speckledhen and Seriousbill,
I guess I need to be more patient. I hope to get a few as good as your second string.
I have to admit watching both your posts regarding Delawares gives me both concern and hope for my hatchery bird. Every time I see bad things regarding the hatchery...

I got my bird from MM. I went with them as sandhill did not have bird this year and I would have to wait for later in the year for chicks from some of the others hatcheries.
I have quite a range of sizes, shapes and coloring. I ordered 10 males and 15 females in hope of...
This is a picture of one of my Delaware roos chicks(6wks old). Is this much barring normal for Delawares or is this a sign of some other breed in the mix.
I have a few like others like this and they seem to be among the largest males in the bunch. The pullet next to him is one of the...

Went to the feedstore yesterday and they had lots of hatchery Delawares, including one older cockerel that very obviously has Columbian Rock blood.
What were the tell tale signs of the Columbian Rock blood?
Below information came from the ALBC website.
My question would the sex linked off spring(or the first pairing) still considered Delaware Chickens or would they be a hybrid?
Delaware males may be mated to New Hampshire or Rhode Island Red females and produce chicks of the Delaware color...
I am glad you posted your horse stall conversion. My chicks are 5 weeks old and have outgrown the small brooder box in the garage and I have been tetering back and forth about either building a tractor style coop or converting one of the unused horse stall we have in the barn. I like how you...
It doesn't seem fair, a raccoon can eat through chicken wire and I can't eat whole wheat toast without tearing up the roof of my mouth.
I seen peoples posts where the raccoons where reaching in thru the chicken wire to grab the chickens but I did not think they could eat thru it.
I was hoping...
