Our First Chicken Coop!
Made from reclaimed materials, mostly pallets
Our chicken adventure started spring of 2010 when we got 10 pullets. We didn't have ANY chicken knowledge what-so-ever! We did a lot of research on BackYardChickens.com on every aspect of keeping chickens - and still do...
We have a rooster that is doing the same thing and he is with 12 hens. He's "gentle" with 2/3's of them - the other 1/3 look about like what you described. He is about 8 months old. I keep hoping he'll grow out of it. Some of the hens submit to him, some he chases and forces himself on...
I actually painted the nails of one of my Buffs. I used a lighter blue polish so it wouldn't stand out so much as I was afraid of the others pecking at it. I only did one foot though. I wanted to be able to tell her apart from the others and I didn't have anything else on hand to tag her...
We got 2 straight run BR chicks a week after we got 8 pullets (Buffs & Sex Links). The 2 BR's never seemed to develop a "bond" with the rest of the chicks even though they were only a week apart. The BR's were generally next to each other all the time in the brooder. The other 8 never seemed...
It looks like what we just discovered!
I saw what looked like calluses on a few of our flock. They didn't have the distinct scab look like you see in the usual bumblefoot pics - at least when their feet were dirty. Here's a pic:
I soaked the hens feet and they still didn't look like the...
Thanks for the responses!
It looks like thickened and cracked skin- like a person's heel who wears flip flops all of the time...
Like mine!
Actually this is exactly what I was leaning towards. I read a thread here somewhere that someone sanded their pads a little and it helped. So I...
Thanks for the thoughts. I looked at some of our other hens feet and they sort look that way. Maybe she's just limping because she jumped off the roost wrong - she is one of our bigger girls. I think I'll post it to the "owie forum" just to get a few other opinions. If it is Bumblefoot...
I've looked at a lot of Bumblefoot threads and I'm still not sure if this is it.
We live in Colorado and it is terribly dry here - very little humidity. All our animals have dry skin. Do any of you have a problem with your chickens feet cracking due to dry climate?
I'm new to chickens...
I have a question for my fellow Coloradans....sorry if this shouldn't be posted here but I thought I'd ask locals instead of the whole forum.
Do any of you have a problem with your chickens feet cracking due to the dry climate here? I'm new to chickens and we have a chicken with what looks...
Whew, I finally have our page finished! https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=57839
There's so many great ideas here and people that are willing to share ideas and lessons learned. This site is a blessing and was a tremendous help with our coop build. I hope our page can help...
Thanks for the reassurance - it's hard to have any willpower around these cuties! So far I have not gone back for more. Then again, there's always tomorrow!
look like RIR? what breed are they?
nicoletm24 - we got 3 RIR's and 3 EE's. They are so mellow and gentle compared to our original...
Well, we had to make a trip to our local Big R store yesterday and what did we hear.....peep, peep, peep. Oh no, chicks! What? I thought I was safe - they're not supposed to have chicks this time of year, they never have before.
Needless to say I wasn't prepared, my defenses were down...
Sorry, I misspoke about them being wild - we knew they were domestic ducks, they just come from a farm where they are not pets at all. They don't have any socialization with the owners.
When they were younger they stood more upright, that's why we thought they might be Runners. Guess we...
Hi everyone -
We've recently adopted 3 wild ducklings that are approximately 1 month old. My guess is that they are Runners from pics I've seen but we're new to ducks and are unsure. Also, when they feather out (they're just starting) will they change color much?
Thanks for your help!
