Just moved to a new house and need to start planning the summer yard set up, how did the roof set up last though the winter? Would you change anything? Love the look of this! I would love to simulate it if it worked well through winter. (FYI- we're in Utah with lots of snow)

    jersey giants

I only have experience with two sussex birds and they're both SUPER flighty, and kind of a pain because they're smart enough to get out on occasion. Just fyi :)

chicks under a non-broody hen at night?

Tried to find a thread like this but didn't have any luck. Feel free to send me a link if you know of one. Last Oct I had a hen go broody, I ended up getting a three chicks for her- she raised them really well- I didn't have to do much at all it was super nice! Those chicks are now two roo's...

    Bloody claw!

One of my chickens has a bloody toe/claw. We've been having some issues (see the thread about pecking order problems in the behavior section) with our buff orp picking on the recent additions to the flock (in Oct). It looks as though there's barely a claw there, it's quite short, although all...

    Pecking order problems

So I started with a flock of 6 mixed breed chickens, then last October a neighbor's lab had a chicken dinner, and I had a hen go broody so we got her three chicks to raise. Here we are in the end of Jan. with 8 chickens (two of the chicks may be roo's- but that's a different post on a different...

Hard Core Broody/Breaking the Broody hen

I have a broody hen (she turned broody about the second week in Sept). No roo's, so I got a few fertilized eggs from a friend. None were successful. Now it's time to make her loose the broody-ness so she can put some weight back on before winter. We've been searching any local ads for day old...

    First timer- need help

Candled the egg- doesn't look like it survived much past when we last candled it around day 15 :( my kids are heartbroken. I can't find any local (utah) day old chicks at the moment so it looks like we're going to have to put her in a dog crate. With the temperatures dropping where should I put...

    First timer- need help

I've had my chickens for about 16 months now and we've had an absolute ball with them! One went broody beginning of September. We waited a few days to make sure she was serious before putting some fertilized eggs under her. We got 3 brahma eggs, and she kicked two out around day 14. Day 21 was...

    November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

Apparently we were participating without knowing it! haha. We had a chicken go broody beginning of Sept. and after we realized she was serious about it we stuck a few fertilized eggs under her. I think today was day 21! How often can I check on her before it becomes detrimental?! We're dying to...

Advice on letting broody hen hatch eggs

Okay- I have a broody Black sex link. She was broody for about a week before we stuck some fertilized eggs under her (three from a friend with a roo). She kicked two out somewhere around day 14. So there's one left as a possibility- as of this afternoon there wasn't any activity (today was day...

Missing feathers on front of the neck (not molting and no roo's) and bulge on the lower breast

My two black sex links are missing feathers on the front of their necks. One is missing them right under where their ears are under the waddles and around the other side. Only about 1.5" or 2" square area of complete feather loss. Haven't looked super closely to see if I can see bugs yet but I'm...

argh! need help asap making a decision

So they did start molting like crazy a week after I posted this. I mean our whole backyard had gusts of feathers floating freely ha ha. They were hatched jan. of this year! They've been great layers so I don't understand why they'd molt "early" unless it was because of the weather change- is...
