I prefer to use a broody hen but I don't have any at the moment. Our Australorp hatched a handful herself a few years ago and was such a good mom that she got renamed 'Mama'
😂 No I have an incubator! I just took that picture first! Thank you for such detailed information! I've been googling all day and reading on genetics lol! So very helpful!
My neighbor gave me these eggs to incubate. She labelled them above. The roo is a Blue Cochin. Does anyone have any idea what these crosses may look like? The 3 I have marked don't look to be viable, but I'm keeping them in for the next week to be 100% sure.
This may seem silly but I teared up reading this! ❤️ you are such a wonderfully kind person to give this tiny helpless duckling so much love! Bless your heart!
I just hatched 6 chicks yesterday! I did 50% up until ‘lockdown’ then raised it to 75% and that worked great! I read an article saying temp is more important than humidity but who knows!? Not me, this was my first time hatching my own too! Good luck!!
we introduced 2 newbies (teenage age) to our existing flock in the fall and they were picked on so we fenced off an area within the coop and made sure everyone had food and water and they were introduced that way with the fence helping! After a few days we removed the fence and there was no...
Thanks for the input! I’m curious to watch the look develop with growth. I’m thinking jarred rock too now that I’ve looked more. I guess I’ll wait and see if I end up with ‘chocolate’ eggs or not!
I just did a little more research. Looks like egg color will tell me once the time comes. I got them from TSC labeled as French Cuckoo Marans, but I’m reading that barred rocks are similar, but have yellow legs. Interesting to say the least.
They are mostly yellow with slate ‘stripes’ down the fronts, more so on the dark smaller one. I’m a chicken newby so I’m not positive on what’s the norm.
5 wks! This is our first year with chickens so I trusted that sexed pullets would all be pullets! This is 2 of our 4 that are looking to be cockerels! I’m a little bummed because I wanted to keep all of them, but I’m nervous to have 2 roosters with 6 hens (my dad is starting 4 pullets that we’re...
We decided to keep 1 rooster. I say ‘1’ because we are now starting to think one of our Cuckoo Marans may also be a Roo!! We’re going to wait it out to be sure, then keep the friendlier one. Here are pics of Petunia (the lighter feathered one) who we think may be a Roo also.
