Lost a chick today from a broody hen

Following this thread with interest. Hope remaining chick does well. I had a chick disappear. I hunted high and low and it had vanished. Found its body weeks and weeks later squashed in behind a stone trough I use as a dust bath that was flush with the stone wall. No idea how she got in there

How dirty is too dirty to set?

Have set and hatched dirtier eggs for sure. Fingers crossed you have a successful hatch

    Rotating fertilized eggs under broody

Understand what you mean, I wouldn’t risk it, either stick with the ones she’s on now or pull and discard for the new batch. 2 to 5 days is a big gap, 1 or 2 days might have been fine just to add the extra eggs. Hope that’s helpful

    Bloody shell

No these girls are around 18months. As I say usually normal, I won’t worry to much, that terrible one seemed to be a one off. And everyone seems happy otherwise

    Bloody shell

No not always. More often than not none, this was a picture from a week or two ago but I had no idea who’s egg it was. Today one of my RIR was in laying while I collected the eggs, there was an egg later on with some blood on but not as much as pictured. (I just used this picture because it’s...

    Broody leaving eggs

Thank you. No idea how long it was pipped. It got out the hole I had picked away thinking it was dead, and is not drying off, cheeping increasingly loudly and fumbling around as normal. Great outcome. Luckily I have day olds in brooder to add it to in the morning.

Any idea what’s going on here. Finally worked out who is laying these eggs today and would like to help them if needed?

    Broody leaving eggs

So we have a great wee Russian Orloff bantam hen outside. Who’s a reliable broody, right up until the end. Today, day 21. She’s been sat on 7 eggs. 6 I gave her and one she snuck in herself. 3pm today she was still on the nest. 6pm she’s up and about with only 3 chicks. She did this last time...

    Disappearing chick?

Well no sign of it, it’s been dark for hours already so have kind of given up hope. Assuming a big bird of some sorts might have lifted it. Usually only have buzzards around and it wouldn’t have been them. So this hawk that’s been around maybe, hope it doesn’t make a habit of it

    Disappearing chick?

Ah I hope not, have seen a hawk a couple of times, hubby says he’s been seeing one frequently recently. Bugger. Will look lots more anyway just incase that hasn’t been the case

    Disappearing chick?

I have searched everywhere, nothing to be found. I assumed I might come across a body pretty quickly but nothing. They free range so I guess could be anywhere. Having to leave to do school run but when we get back will get kids out to help too
