One note- i put the babies out with the bigger chickens hoping
1. that one of the bigger chickens would get broody and mother them
2. that they would get used to eachother right off the bat while the chicks were small and not a threat.
My 3 week old isn't getting pecked regularly, but they do...
Hello,
I have a problem- I have 2 grown hens- full sized cochin and brahma, and I had gotten 2 new chicks which I kept with the ladies in the coop with a lamp. Things went fine, though the grown chickens didn't really interact with the babies, but last night one of the chicks disappeared- I...
Dang it! I know what started them laying- it got cold!
I put a light bulb in their coop to keep them warm. Darn it!!!!!!!
They might had been fine through the cold without the heat anyway, and in my stupidity I started them laying when I was going to be out of town and unable to watch them...
What confuses me, though, is that she did not get a prolapse from laying so much as from getting a crusty butt. How the heck? I don't understand how she got so matted that a whole egg got stuck in a matt, which stopped another egg from coming out.
I do feel bad that in trying to relase the...
I made a vet appointment. I do think I'll put her down, though. I'd hate for this to happen again if I was out of town.
I just feel bad seeing her suffer, and I don't want the others to kill her (though it's hard to imagine that as they are so very docile.
Ugh. Why did she have to start...
Another thing- I wonder if there is a genetic/physical tendency here. This chicken has a very short body- much squatter than my other 2. I suppose it's hard to know.
On the plus side- there is no egg still stuck in there. I got it out this morning.
On the down side, I'm stuck at work right now, so I can't do anything for her till I get home.
I really think I'm going to have to put her down. It would be one thing if this just happened yesterday- but...
Hi,
I'd really like some advice.
I left my dog and chickens with a housesitter for a couple weeks, and wouldn't ya know it- they started laying, finally. The thing is that one got really hurt- and I'm fairly concerned she won't make it.
When I "treated" her this mornings, she had gunk stuck...
Yeah, the person looking to adopt him has an acre- which may not be much to you guys, but is enormous compared to our yard!
The adopter has 2 other roosters, though, so they may fight. However I would think that if there is enough space they would be OK.
What do y'all think?
The worst of it is that because of the fire our coop is out in the front yard right now! So if he started crowing it would be totally unmuffled. We don't have a garage at either house. I do have a person who is interested in adopting him, so that makes me feel better.
Hi all,
I need some advice,
One of our four chickens turned out to be a rooster. He's a beautiful light brahma. He is also ENORMOUS.
He hasn't started to crow yet- as they are all only about 5 months old. The thing is that we live inside seattle city limits and there is a three-hen, no...
It turns out that our light Brahma hen is a rooster, which is sad as he is very nice. We just had a house fire, so I am totally overwhelmed and I would like to find him a home ASAP. Any takers? I'm considering giving away our whole (3 hens and a rooster) flock as I am super duper busy, but I...
Rats seem to be flocking to try and eat my chickens' food. Yuck! I have been brining in their food during the day when the girls free range, but I keep seeing them around the yard. Do I need to worry about my vegetable garden bringing them around?

Thanks. How important is it to keep her separated? The other chickens don't seem to mind her. I have 2 Brahmas and 2 Cochins. The brahmas fight a bit for dominance, but all my girls are pretty passive overall.
One of my chickens is limping. She's sort of the runt of the flock size-wise, thought the other chickens don't seem to pick on her.
The other day I saw her hanging by herself in the coop while the others were out foraging- which is weird. This morning she seems to be hanging with the other...
