Well, I'm man enough to admit that we have too many chickens. It's a sad day indeed.
I think the problem started when we got a broody hen and thought it would be cool to hatch a few eggs under her. We now have 3 pullets and 1 cockerel that need to go. They are crossed with a French Copper...
I do something similar. I live close to Leland Mills and get a bag of 18% layer and another bag of 24% then mix the two together. I've been doing this all winter and the girls have done really well with it.
Well, my broody hen has gotten the best of me. I gave it a week and couldn't keep her out of the nestbox day or night for more than a minute. I even moved her when she was asleep and she'd hop right back down and get back on the nest. Today I got fertilized eggs from my wife's grandfather (giant...
I've been lurking but not posting :)
I don't really want to keep the chicks since I already have my limit and this girl is super broody. The only time I can get her to leave the nest box is at night when I physically place her on the roost. And even then she sometimes gets down and goes in the...
Ack! I have a broody hen. I would even classify her as belligerently broody. Besides the usual remedies I've been trying does anyone have any fertilized eggs I can give her to hatch/raise? I'll even give you the chicks back. I'm in Spanish Fork.

Sounds like you have a good set-up for your birds. They will be fine as long as you have draft free ventilation (I think it's 1 sq ft per bird). I've never had a chicken get frostbite on their comb. You mainly run into problems with it when your coop isn't ventilated enough and the...
We have a combination of Virginia Creeper and Grape. The chickens will eat the grapes and leaves but won't touch the Creeper. The grape vines also attract wasps which the chickens also eat, or try to.

Yes it is.
In NJ we had so many trees around that there was always plenty of shade for the girls. In Utah it's the exact opposite and that summer sun that beats down is relentless. I had the water under there so it wouldn't be like drinking hot coffee.
Love it! I have the same problem...
