OK, I am back from my travels. Rocky was still in the trap, spending 2 nights there. He ate an entire large fish head while I was gone. I humanely relocated him in a remote area off the Cape. Trap is reset with a nice hunk of fish for tonight (Thursday). This will be the 3rd night of trapping.
Thanks to everyone following this story! I learn a lot from this forum. I had to take a trip so Rocky stays in the cage until I return tomorrow. Hopefully he does not get out. I am going to release him a long distance away. Then I will reset the trap. I expect to score some more pests. Update...
Well, sleepy me I did catch something... The little bugger was curled up against the angled door so I could not see him when I was standing up. And yes, he was playing his role. I guess I will leave the trap out a few days and see what else shows up.
Well my trap-- a standard single entry raccoon-sized havahart-- was set last night next to the coop with a very inviting fish head as bait. The fish was dragged to the other side of the cage and the trap door was tripped... but no Rocky inside, the little devil escaped. I will try again tonight.
I have windows (11 of them) on all four sides of my coop with hardware cloth on the inside. He cannot get in that way. However, I have a dirt floor (I knew I was vulnerable here, especially in one low corner, but went several months without a problem). He dug in that way. Interestingly, he did...
Heard a screaming racket from the coop last night around 11pm. A coon was inside the coop, just resting on the next box. Not afraid of me in the least. He did not touch the 10 RI reds in there. Maybe he was just too laid back and had enough food-- he opened up the feed can. Here is his picture...
Thanks everyone for posting. We picked up 6 RI Reds from a local farm the day they were hatched, May 18. My daughter picked them out and I did not pay much attention to them until they were set up in their new home. I will give them numbers:
1. very dark wide stripes like a chipmunk
2. chipmunk...
Cape Cod for me. Four hens since last October in a tractor... great fun and love the eggs! Tried for some Easter chicks but the local farm was out. Wonder why? No worry he is going to do a special hatch for me. I am going to make a second coop out of an unused wooden play-set/swing-set. Keeping...
Great article, thanks. I now think that my know it all friends talked me out of my first suspicion: they stopped laying because of extreme cold, not lack of light. Extreme cold also means snow and ice in the run which they need to traverse to reach food and water. Anyway, the light I provide now...
Hi All,
I am a new member. I got 4 approximately one-year old hens (RI Red) in October and they live in a rather large chicken tractor. They get the good laying pellets and high-quality table scraps. I also give them oyster shells. I am aware of the various causes of the slowing of egg...
