Last week I had 6 hens and one rooster. Now I have 3 hens one of which is nearly dead this morning. I have no idea what's wrong? I was thinking a snake coming and biting them, but I'm starting to thing they're ill and I have no idea what it is or how to stop it. There's hardly any feathers...
Hello, im in the process of hatching my first set of chicks. One of the crosses im expecting is a White polish Hen with a Buff orpington Rooster. I dont understand Genetics at all and really dont even want to try to understand them as they make my head hurt lol Does anyone know what they will...
I have a BO hen who I found this morning sitting by the fence away from all the others not moving. I went over and stirred her up to notice that she was limping. She was not using her right leg. I immediately picked her up to investigate, and noticed a large wound under her right wing, it looked...
Update. Nevermind! When I got home this evening she was back in the coop! We candled all the eggs and saw no embryos forming so we will put some in the nesting boxes to encourage laying in the desired area. Just for my own knowledge would chicks be ok in the environment she was in? Even in the cold.
Ok. Do you think once the chicks hatch they will be ok there with her? It's the 'lean to' on my shed where I keep my mower and some junk. It's open on the front. Do you think I could build a small box to put over her so they can be more protected? Also, how do I keep my other hens from laying...
One of my BO hens has gone broody...not in the coop, in my shed? She's sitting on atleast 2-3 eggs minimum. It's low 30's at night here and going to be getting colder. Can I move the eggs to the coop or will this mess her up? I know it's cold and these are the first of my eggs but I don't want...
Unfortunately I don't have the ability to do that right now I'm at full capacity with work, family and farm. So looks like the extra one is dinner. Thanks for the replies! Very helpful!
They are 23 weeks now. The roosters mate the hens quite often that I can see. Feathers are normal for now! My goal was to keep the rooster from each breed so that I can breed true breeds in the spring. but I can eat the other rooster if needed. Won't bother me a bit.
Great news...do you think that the teens and single digits would affect them starting? because by December we will probably be looking at those. I just want to make sure I can do everything I can to help them start laying:) thanks!!
Hello, I have 7 australorp and buff orp pullets, they are about 20 weeks and I know it would be on the earlier side of laying to start but I am concerned about the cold weather, we are already in the low 30's some mornings here with afternoon temps all the way up into the 70's. and of course the...
Thanks for the reply! I first thought wry neck but every other case of wryneck I've seen in here is nearly crippling for the chicken? Are there lighter cases?
Also, I caught him earlier and it's almost like his neck is stuck in the lowered position. It fully extends if I do it for him but he won't extend it himself. Also he is sleeping a lot and gets left behind the flock and doesn't seem to care as they all usually do.
