so I've placed my order with McMurray for 13 LF cochins of assorted colors (it was a split order, 30 in all) this past saturday. It's been 1 full day and I'm already considering setting up my brooder and buying all of my baby supplies. They aren't due to arrive until April 25th or 26th So, I...
Perhaps you could go ahead and order your chicks, have them delivered, and brood them in 50 gal storage container in your house. It may give your DH a little more incentive to finish your new coop sooner. It's hard to wait when you are stricken with fuzzy butt fever. And it's exactly what I...

When we bought from the breeder they said the way they sexed them was by their chest. Roo's have a golden colored chest with no spots, and hens have the spots on their chest....correct???? If thats the case, then I'm fairly certain it was a hen. I was also getting 3 eggs a day from the...
Oh, I forgot to mention they are fed gamebird crumbles. I also give them mealworms as a treat, so I don't think the food is an issue. The hutch has a tin roof (the wavy kind), so I guess it could be possible she hit her head on it trying to escape him. However, there is an "underground" box...
Well, I HAD 4 quail(3 girls, 1 boy). Had being the key word. I got them fall of last year. We were told they were 4 weeks old and should be laying any time. Anyhoo-they didn't start laying until about 2 weeks ago. I noticed the roo had started crowing and mating the hens shortly after. His...
Since it was nice out yesterday, I spent a good while outside watching my birds(something I've really missed-I gotta have my chicken t.v). While I was out there I noticed we had at least 3 Coopers hawks casing our coop. Well, one of them decided to land in a small dogwood that is right beside...
I have 2 Black Spanish turkeys and they are awesome. They let us pet them, come flying across the yard when we whistle for them, and in general are just funny little characters. We got them as poults and handled them ALOT, and they have made wonderful pets.

I have two silver pheonix hens (no roo). They are super sweet, they each lay an egg EVERY day, they are doing great in VA with all the snow (we are currently in the middle of a snow storm and are expecting 30+ inches of snow) so I wouldn't say that applies to all pheonix. This is just...
My little bantum silkie roo mates my big buff orp girls So does my little japanese bantum (and he's even smaller than the silkie). They just hop up there, hold on and get the job done.

1) What was the size of your first flock?
2) Do you recommend any chicken that catches fancy, like... well, any from mixes to ornamental, or sticking with a goal? Like all egg-layers, or fryers, or purebred with no mixes?
3) What was your first coop? Did you build it yourself, or bought it...
I buy the big bags of corn on the cob for squirrels from our local pet store and hang them from the trees around our coop. The squirrels love them and so do the crows

It looks like a young skunk, or maybe thats a really big chicken-who knows, maybe the skunk thinks its a chicken???? At any rate, thats pretty darn cute

Ok, so we have 6 girls that are of laying age. We were getting 4 or 5 eggs a day from them. Then 3 or 4, then 1 or 2, and now...........nothing. In fact I think it has been almost two months of nothing. One of them is definately molting, but there are no signs that the others are. They have...
We used a small reptile heating pad and a critter keeper(little plastic terrerium with a vented top). I got the heating pad small enough that it only covered half the terrerium. The reptile heating pads are made so you can stick them to the underside of the critter keeper. I don't know how they...
Finally!!! Our broody has been trying to hatch eggs since spring and now shes finally got babies!!!! She was so persistant I seriously thought she might die sitting on eggs. So far there are 5 and one more has piped. She started with nine (she stepped on and killed 2 and 1 shows no signs of...
