    Duck question

I posted this earlier in the duck forum, but have more questions more related to being in Florida. I had a duck family show up on our lake. A female Pekin and mallard drake with four ducklings. The first night, two babies disappeared. I'm in a rural area, only a few houses on the lake, 2/3 of...

    Duck question

I tried to lure them back into the yard to try to catch them, but no luck. Last night I think they slept in the water with a flock of wood storks. If anyone is interested, one of the babies has a white throat.

    Duck question

Sadly, I only saw two babies this morning. I was afraid of that, since they were on the edge of the lake last night and we have lots of racoons go through there at night. If I did decide to try to keep them, or at least the mother, is their housing much like a chickens? I've only been a...

    Duck question

I think all the babies are crested. We live in a rural area with only a few houses on the lake, but there is a series of lakes close to each other and a lot of farms scattered. Maybe she came from one of them. I also saw another male mallard nearby with a baby about the same size. I don't know...

    Duck question

They started moving up into the yard and my husband threw them some bread.

    Duck question

I never knew there were white mallards, but you could be right. I just assumed since it was all white with a yellow beak, that it was a domestic duck. Obviously, I know little about ducks. They must of had the babies and couldn't leave with the rest of the mallards. Thank you for your info.

    Duck question

I live on a lake and we've been in a drought so our lake is low and we have more birds than normal during winter. When I came home today, I saw a white duck with a male mallard and four brown babies. Is this normal? We had a flock of mallards earlier but when the weather stayed warm they left...

I'm another newbie to chickens. When I was a kid, one of my neighbors chickens chased me and I never wanted to be around them again. Well, things change. A few years ago, some bad things happened in my life, including almost losing the small business my husband and I have owned for 18...

    FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Right after I let my birds out to free range yesterday afternoon, I saw a dark shadow and ran back out to see a buzzard. There were a few more on top of a dead tree. They didn't seem to have any interest in my birds. Now, you got me concerned. I see them frequently but didn't think they...

    FLORIDA!!!!!ALWAYS SUNNY SIDE UP!!!

Quote: I have cats and live in a rural area. One of my cats is semi feral. He doesn't bother my chickens but will catch anything else including rabbits. He also won't let any other cats onto our property. The other cats and dog just watch the birds. Like others have said, we have lots of...

    Knot on hens head

I kept both hens in the pen today. I tried to let the roos in right before dark, and they immediately went after Buffy. They are now outside the pen and on their own. I guess they will make it or not until I can get rid of them. But, what do you think I should do for her as far as...

    Knot on hens head

My rooster has been very rough with my laying hen. She looks like she has been beaten on her head. She is black and swollen on the side of her head where I think he grabs her. Also you can see the back of her head is swollen. I can't see any broken skin. I've got her isolated in the pen...

Has anyone used the green plastic chicken fence?

I bought a roll of poultry netting 7' X 100' to make a bigger temporary run area for the chickens when I'm nearby. I started putting it up, but then took it down because I was afraid they may get caught in it. Has this happened to anyone?
