kinda what I thought. The 2 black chicks have solid black heads - one has a little white below the throat area and the other is solid (as far as I can tell) Mamma is very protective. Will have to see which is which. I suspect the white spot to be the rock and the solid to be the marans and...
Just hatched 3 chicks (out of 4 eggs- waiting for last one) - broody mamma keeping them under wraps.
Daddy = Rhode Island Red
2 eggs = americana's (one golden/white and one like a sunburst gold/browns/greys)
1 egg = barred rock
1 egg = black copper marrans
What will I get? Any sex...
Super new at the chickens - (7months) - A. do nothing til spring - maybe they both need to mature a bit more B. #1 is a bit stocky in comparison, & thicker legs - could be the pics - C. #2 - possibly a boy - my RIR kinda looked that way startin out - longer neck and thinner for awhile...
It hasn't gotten old here. Mine started laying in August and the 2nd one in Oct. Just waiting for my 24 weekers to start - since the time change it may take a bit longer. Luckily we have great weather here is San Diego CA. Still get EGGCITED everytime I get one.
Just thought I'd post my flock of morning groomers. There are actually 7 here. Only the two bigguns on the right are laying, ready and waiting for the others to start. Congrats on all the new eggies this week. (so hard to get a good pic of all at the same time)
I made an excel spreadsheet - all names across the top - # 1 - 31 down the side - and an "X" marks the spot for each egg laid - each month starts a new sheet within the document - easy peasy - got lost on my calendar - kids ran off with it LOL (also a sheet listing all ages in 2 week incriments.)
oh, this thanks was for Chickiemommy.
Thank you for your response. That is kinda what I thought based on what I could find. Just wanted to be more sure before I purposely through these nice green leafs into the run. We do not have enough green stuff around here right now. Even resort to...
Hey OT's - I am ripping up part of my garden - can my chickens have my green bean plants - all the leafy parts and stems. Have heard green beans and tomato plants can be poisonous to them? Already had to have Rooster school this week do not need more drama. I have 3 that are abt 6 months and...
Wow What a Chicken Week I have had....Tues: Lost one bird to illness (thanks again for all the insight and support) - Wed: got our first egg from our eldest - Fri: Got our second egg (same chicken) -- Now for my Surprise: I think I have a Roo. "She" has been taking over as "Alpha Chicken"...
Thanks to everyone who posted there thoughts and opinions as to what my bird had. Maxine is no longer with us as of 10 am this morning. We took care of business. Since there was no improvement overnight I was not going to prolong her discomfort. Yes my 4 birds all have names (now 3), but it...
yeah, been thinkin it over since this morning. For now she is just isolated and not liking it much. (I don't like it either but...) thank you for your opinion. BTW really enjoy this thread.
I appreciate the honest response to my request for advice and respect the OT experience. (Grandpa was a farmer and I've been exposed to butcher days on the farm - since I was little they kept me at a distance but I could see most of it) Not exactly ready to do it myself - my mother may need to...
