One of my buff orpingtons looks like she's molting, but she usually does it in the fall/early winter. I haven't seen any bullying, we don't have a rooster and she's the only one, suggesting it's not flock-wide (flock of three). Any advice or suggestions?
I don't see how, but I was out of town and had a friend feeding them in their tractor coop. Her foot has dried blood so that's why I think she injured herself.
I hope the pic loaded, I'm techno challenged. Marigold appears to have scratched herself with a claw and it's gotten infected. We've treated it with peroxide and are keeping her isolated and quiet (fussing with her sisters was not a problem). I'm all ears if anyone has advice or comments. Thanks.
My buff orp has the same problem, but hers is because she's so fluffy back there the poo collects on her feathers and pulls them out. My daughter and I have to do "poop-ectomies" every once in a while. May not be related, but she doesn't seem to have laid an egg in the 13 months we've had her.
We are expecting temps as low as -15 to -20 next week. How cold hardy are cold hardy chickens? Two Buff Orps and a Rhode Island Red share a tractor coop. My chicken dealer (I'm new) said they don't need any heat source during the winter, but seriously??

I have a couple of issues that I'd appreciate some advice on.
-- We have 3 chickens and we're pretty sure the same two are laying all the eggs. Someone told me this was normal.
-- One of them gets messy on her butt and doesn't appear to care about cleaning herself.
Thanks for any advice...
We've had our three chickens since 20 May. Two Buff Orpingtons and a Rhode Island Red mix, all approx 6-7 months old. We have two girls laying eggs regularly now, the third, which we think is one of the Orps, seems to be holding out on us. Here are a couple of the other things we're concerned...
Wow! Thanks for the warm welcome. We are into day 5. Girls look good, but no eggs yet. I think they are still getting used to everything ... including the min schnauzer who stares at them like they were Martians.
We just got our girls yesterday and today one of them started laying on the ground like she was on a nest. Going broody or just tired/stressed from being relocated to our house?
Hi everyone... my name is Kathie. My daughters and I just got two buff orpingtons and a mixed breed Rhode Island Red yesterday along with a new tractor coop. We are brand new to urban chicken farming and very excited. I'm sure I'll be on here with lots of questions - please be patient!
