Hello! We have a 1 year old dark Brahma who was being pecked pretty badly by her flock mates. She has a pretty large bald patch on her back and around her vent. The area near her vent is pretty red, and while applying Vaseline and peck no more today I noticed a hard white lump (see the third...
We haven’t had much luck unfortunately… right now we’re keeping her separated (but visible to) the other chickens during the day and letting her roost with them at night. We’re applying Vaseline and peck no more, when she goes in to roost. I’ll let you know how that works.
Hello! We have a Brahma who is about a year old who has a ton of missing feathers on her back from pecking. It began a couple months ago, and started with some wounds, so I think originally she was being picked on by our bossy Copper Maran. It started when we had a long stretch of very cold...
Thanks so much for this post. We live in Colorado, and our overnight low on Wednesday is -15°.
Planning on doing a quick clean in the coop and adding extra fresh bedding before then. We may put up a tarp as a windbreak to keep drafts out. It doesn’t get that cold here very often, but I think...
Hello! I just added 4 new chicks to our flock. They’ve been in an old dog kennel in our run for the last week to let the other chickens get used to them, and we’re planning on letting them out today. Since they’ve been separated from the adults in the kennel, we’ve continued to give them chick...
Attached- it’s the best I could get!
No living mites anymore- this is the 3rd time I’ve checked her today and I haven’t ended up with any on my hands or seen any moving. They all appear to be dead, including the ones near the ends of her feathers. I’m mostly wondering what to do about the stuff...
Hello!
We just sprayed our two adult chickens with elector psp to take care of mites prior to adding some new chicks to our coop. It worked great- no live mites on the chickens or in the coop that we can see. However, one chicken (who had more mites than the other) has quite a bit of crusty...
Hello!
I noticed mites on one of my adult chickens this morning. We cleaned out the coop today, sprayed the inside and chickens with permethrin spray and sprinkled permethrin dust over the new bedding. I plan on re-spraying next weekend. I think you can use the permethrin dust every couple...
Thanks so much. How often should we use the spray and poultry dust? Every couple days?
Also, can we eat the eggs? We’ve been tossing them out, but if we’re spraying for 3 or 4 weeks that’s a lot of eggs to throw out.
I think the Martins spray is the one we used. It says not to re-spray the birds for 28 days. Can we spray them sooner?
I was planning on spraying down the coop again this weekend. There were definitely fewer mites out there today.
Thanks!!
