I saw this while on here searching for a humane way to put down a chicken, while watching a sweet rooster die a slow death from Marek's.
Last year I had a small flock of 4 vaccinated hens, and took in a rooster a friend found loose on the street. One of my hens hatched a dozen chicks a month...
Finally!!! She seems to be getting back to herself. I locked her in the coop and locked out two that were pecking her, and she gradually started drinking and eating a little. I wonder if keeping her inside and coddling her was keeping her from just being a chicken? Who knows!
Thanks, that didn't work, either, though...
It's strange - she shows a little interest in food sometimes, and makes like she's going to eat, but it's almost like she can't connect it with her beak. She walks around, but very slowly.
I've posted a few times about a sick hen (sorry!), and I'm at a loss as to what to do with her. She's been like a zombie for over a week - she won't eat or drink (drinks a little when I make her), has her feathers fluffed up and mostly just stands or sits ion the corner. I suspect it's mareks...
Thanks for the tip... I happened to have some of those red dissolvable B complex pills for humans, so I made a weak solution. I can only get her to take small amounts of liquids, though. Then she struggles to get away.
And no, she hadn't been laying for a while, but she hatched a bunch of chicks...
I took on a stray rooster, he went lame after a few months, I had him put down and tested , positive for mareks. My hens are 15 months now, had been vaccinated, one has fallen sick. Won't eat, feathers puffed up, mostly just stands there. I have her inside, roaming (and crapping) around my...
Thank you!
I've been following other postings advice and giving her hypericum 30 twice a day now for two days, but she hasn't changed at all. She mostly just stands in the corner, sometimes sits, dozing off. Or slowly walks around the room. She has her feathers all puffed up all the time now...
I took in a rooster a few months back, he gradually became lame and after reading the forums I had him put down and tested. Came back positive for Marek's. Now my favorite Easter Egger hen is not herself... wanders around with feathers puffed up, seems confused, shows a little interest in food...
UPDATE!
They didn't find Marek's, or really anything else! The report showed everything was normal, except that his spleen was enlarged to double normal size. Report says they have no idea why his leg was paralyzed.
Poor guy... I can't help but wonder if he would have improved.
I thought I lost my bantam easter egger almost a month ago, and today I found her tucked into the goat barn behind a bale of hay on top of 15 eggs. I couldn't see anything by candeling, so I broke one - just a rotten egg. Same with 2 more I tried. My rooster was about 10 times her size, so I...
here's a few more head shots!
Again, all have the same big red rooster daddy, the red one has the EE mom (shown partially here, also on my lap), then obviously a barred rock mom, and the black one is from my gold laced wyandotte. I suspect the black one is a female and the rest are males, but...
My EE hen hatched a clutch from a stray red rooster (RIR?). The EEs had distinctly different tails early on - can anyone tell me, is the bigger tail a sign of a rooster? Their coloring was almost identical. I say "was", because my small-tailed one (I gave half the chicks away, and was down to 3...
