I am going to let me Domique hatch, can I leave her in the coop or should I move her to her own pad until the chicks hatch? If so, should this be done at night?
I am in the same boat. I didn't want to get 50lbs of grower when I know they will start laying in the next month or two. I decided to give them laying feed. I think that they are past the danger zone with too much calcium. They are fully developed soooo if one drops dead or deforms I will let...
I had a hen that was unable to walk. It was like her legs turned to rubber and her toes eventually curled under. She would use her beak and wings to scramble around. She had rickets and we treated her with yogurt with poly-vi-sol vitamine drops. I used 4 drops in a 1/4 cup of plain yogurt every...
Yes, the calcium will be too high and could harm their livers and bones. You will want to set that aside and keep them on grower feed until they start laying in about 8 to 10 weeks.
I agree, you definitly want to keep them on grower feed. You can harm them if you put them on layer too soon. Chickens rarley lay at 14 weeks. Giveing them time to mature will pay off in the long run. You can't hurry nature.
That's what I was thinking as well. They are all so close in age that I think mixing the laying ration with the growing rashions. They are all super healthy so they should be just fine.
I have several breeds of hens and all will start laying in the next month or so. I have some leghorns and a black star that will lay sooner than the others and need to know if I should slowly mix laying crumbles with their current food or should I try to seperate the ladies and give them diffent...
We are just starting. We purchased a Rex buck and two NZ doe's. One will kindle in 2 weeks and the other is 3 month old. They will have about 10 to 15 young and we will butcher at 8 to 12 weeks then we will re breed the doe. I think you want to make sure that there arn't any genetic traits that...
For a broody hen, and if I want a few more chickens, is it easier to find ferile eggs and give her a few or should I borrow a roo and have nature do it's thing? I wouldn't mind slipping in a guinea or two as well. What are your thoughts and experiences?
My hen had rickets pretty bad. I have been treating her with Poly Sol and yogurt. I thought I might have to cull her as she didn't show any signs of improving. She got real good at getting around on her hocks so I thought I would let nature take it's course. Last night after her vitamins and a...
I need to put the hen down that has rickets. She get so tired trying to get around. The treatments have not worked and she is loosing weight. I don't want her to suffer so I think I will need to cull her. I'm not sure how I should do it? Do I hold her and then break her neck or is there an...
Thanks Sammi, She is eating and drinking just fine. She is bright eyed and clucks often. She will wiggle her way out of the coop to forage a little and then I will hand feed her your mix and then put her back in the coop for the night. She doesnt seem ill at all except that she can't use her...
My hen is the same. She still can't walk well and her feet are all curled up. I have continuded with the treatment plan and will taper off tomorrow. She seems good with the exception of scooting around with the other hens. I don't know if I should expect her to die or not or if she will pull...
Im not sure as this is the first time I have delt with rickets. Lets keep eachother posted.I think that once we have the hens re balanced with vitamine d and calcium they should be ok. I hope that there is no permenant disability.
