I'm looking for suggestions on how to find a new home for my two five year old hens. They are still both laying, but not consistently and at this point they are more pets than anything. A neighbor offered to have some local Montagnards come and humanely slaughter them for the stew pot but I'm...
I have put out a call for a wire bottomed cage to friends in order to break my broody hen, but in the meantime, I wanted to know if being broody for 4 weeks is normal? I don't have a rooster, so no fertilized eggs. Is my hen just stubborn, or is this length of time normal. She's still laying...
The Little Urban Coop
This is my adventure into urban chicken keeping. This process has been a long time coming, after searching to find local organic eggs and paying high prices I wanted to have some control over this aspect of our essential menu item. I know it's probably cheaper to just buy...
I live in the city and don't have a feed store nearby, so my question is, what can I feed my chickens during their molt as I read somewhere that they need more protein to grow in new feathers. I have a Whole Foods nearby where I can get grains etc if I can feed them something like that. Thanks
Chicken stew sounds good! The feather plucker is my laziest layer anyway and is the hen that has decided to start crowing. I guess that's three strikes!
One of my hens (a red sex link) has almost no tail feathers left and the soft downy feathers near her vent are almost all gone. My SLW is plucking them right off her - I've seen her do it! I am not able to separate the girls and am trying to come up with a way to make the RSL's feathers less...
I have three hens. They are 1 1/2 years old. I know they're all girls because they all lay. This morning I was in the kitchen and heard loud crowing. The crowing went on for a good 1/2 hour. Why would a hen crow? This is not good as I'm in a subdivision and although the neighbors agreed to me...
My 1 year old red sex link has lost feathers around her vent. It looks awful! Could this be a result of the other hens plucking out her feathers or something else? Thanks.
My 1 year old red sex link has some feather loss in her tail and around her vent area. Is this a result of the other chickens pulling out her feathers, or a disease? I had a hard time getting a photo of the area, she wouldn't keep still! What should I do, if anything. It has been extreamly wet...
I've used all methods with success. Frozen watermelon, pans of water, mist, and frozen bottles of water. Make sure the hens have shade too. I don't have any, but used shade cloth over the run which helps. I do have a small run, but if yours is large you can maybe created shade in part of it. I...
I got my 1 gallon waterer (hangs upside down by the handle) and the trough feeder at Tractor Supply. If you don't have one near you, try an old fashioned hardware or feed store. I'm lucky enough to have both near me. TSC will ship online orders. http://www.tractorsupply.com
From what I've read, it's something to do with light refraction. Since the water in the baggies makes the light bend, it confuses the flies who have 2 complex eyes and within these eyes 3,000 to 6,000 simple eyes. The flies base their sense of direction on where the sunlight is coming from. When...
I had just told THough1956 that I found info on this site about using ziplock baggies partially filled with water around the coop and run (obviously where the chickens can't get at them.) I've seen it used at outdoor patio seating at restaurants too. I tried it last summer and it helped (along...
