Got my Coturnix today--are they really this calm?
I brought quails from different sources and I must say that the Jumbos were really calm. That said, when I started hatching my own quails the first generation was jumpy and didn't let me pick any of them up. The originals from the farm are still relaxed and won't put up too much of a fight... -

Albino Quail
that is awesome! keep us updated! I've never seen an adult albino quail before...most of the posters stop taking pics of the quails after 2 weeks. -
Other birds living with quail?
I've seen doves housed together with quails. I'm not sure if that poses any problems but the owner told me he didn't have any for 2 years now. I'm sure a more experieneced member can probably clear things up on this. -

do you combine the poop with compost when making your compost tea? or do u just mix the poop with water? what's the ratio you're using? -

I was hoping to keep it under my quail cage to absorb some of the poop as it falls down. I guess that's not happening. I've been using it as compost but it's pretty strong and it's already burned a few of my plants even after letting it sit for 2 weeks. I'll try mixing in some carbon material... -

Height of quail pen?
My pen is about 1.5 feet off the ground. So far no problems but it's only been 3 days since I put them out there. I hate to derail the thread but what are these "underground predators" you're talking about? -

Too late...I've opened up the incubator a few times already :( But good news is that the humidity is at a steady between 60 and 70. Should it go higher? I thought if it went too high the chicks could drown? -

Should I put food and water in there? It only incubated for 15 days should I be worried? it seems pretty healthy...and loud. -
mixing quail
For the time being yes you can house them together. Long term I think it's better to introduce 1 to 3 more females to divert the male's attention. Even with a 3 to 1 ratio females to male in my community cage there are some females who are bald from all the mating. -

I got my first hatchling just a few minutes about and now I'm lost! Do I leave the chick in the hatcher (temp 100.5 humdity 60) or do I move it to a brooder? should I give it water and food now? I have a bottle cap of water in there but it doesn't seem to want to drink from it.
