OKay well I will just wait and see if they hatch:) We'll see if Bruno (the rooster) is doing a good job. How long does it take for them to hatch typically?
One of our younger hens is broody and setting on her nest of pullet eggs days and night. Will these little eggs even hatch? And if they do are the chicks going to be normal size?

Well we have enough birds for awhile. But thanks for the info. Wish I would have known it before:) We drove about an hour and a half south of here to get our hens. I'm thinking we will get chicks next time.
I don't know.. maybe this is a stupid question... but what will you do with the turkeys and the ducks?? I guess I never thought about having birds other then chickens..
About using Sevin on the birds....
I would completely rather not use any chemical like Sevin (we dusted them with the 5% Sevin) however my poultry books and everything I've read seems to have no other option then a poultry dust that has the same active ingredient. We use DE too, but the...
We use wood shavings too- from a feed store. We have about four inches deep of them. It does get smelly but once you rake the droppings to the bottom then it smells nice again.
My brother has a chicken wire floor in his coop (he doesn't need to walk in it because he can get to everything...

I misunderstood your question. But I thought it would kill the mites right away. However we dusted on Friday and today (Tuesday) they are still picking at their vent area- I don't know maybe it's just a habit??

I would really like to know this too. I haven't been eating the eggs from the chickens that were dusted with sevin (mainly b/c I'm pregnant and don't want to risk it). I figure I will wait two weeks and then eat them again??

Are you in Kansas? I don't think $5 sounds too bad. I just sold a couple hens at the last Yoder sale for $8 apiece. In the next month or so I'd expect to get at least $10 apiece if not more.
Yes, I'm in Kansas. Now I'm thinking I didn't get that bad of a deal- hearing how much...
I paid $5 a hen for them. Which is a little high in my opinion. But none of the amish farmers around there had a hen surplus so it was hard finding someone that would sell. They buy their hens from hatcheries after they've been laying for a year, so they get them pretty cheap. When they get...
Thanks for all the input. I do like letting them have the choice of where they want to hang out. However, our chicken coop is filling up with poop at a rapid rate now plus who wants to see the chickens all "cooped" up inside when the weather is perfect! I'm going to try moving their feed...
Just had to vent... We didn't want the hassle of raising the chicks again and waiting for them to start laying so we recently purchased 4 full grown hens from a local Amish farm. We are not doing this again. After a couple of days we noticed the chickens were really picking at themselves and...
I know... I know... there has been other posts on the subject. But does anyone know if dusting your chickens w/ Sevin dust will really get into the eggs they lay? We had to dust our four new Hens with Sevin because when we bought them we not only got the hens but a bunch of mites too! We used...
