Room..yes..heat source no. My coop is a ways from my house with no power source. I’m in Kentucky and it’s usually late April, early May before it’s warm enough for 8 week old chicks.
I started early last spring with 18 chicks and I’ve currently got 15 amazing free range layers. I lost 1 to a hawk, and two disappeared (I’m assuming fox, I’ve seen him around). Looking to add a few more to my flock this spring (6-8) but need some advice on introducing new girls to existing...
We got our first chicks early this spring and thus far we’ve had a great experience raising chickens. I noticed about 3-4 weeks ago that one of our leghorns had gone “broody”. I’d read about methods of breaking broodys but out of laziness I decided to wait her out. My daughter has been taking...
Thanks for the help everyone! Here’s a couple more. I’m certain the one is a white leghorn, but the other is starting to get a few dark spots and has different color legs.
The floor and roof are both in good shape. The eaves are open which has allowed the shed to become the home of a family of flying squirrels. I’ve bought a 100’ roll of 24”W hardware cloth that I plan on closing the eaves in with. I also plan on using it as a barrier along the bottom perimeter of...
I’ll definitely take some in the daylight. Dark now and no lights out there, but it’s a completely open 12x12 area. No windows or insulation, studs are exposed. Only current opening is the door.
Attempting to turn this old shed into a our first chicken coop. I’ve been reading coop ideas on here for a while now, but wanted to get some “expert” tips and advice on the do’s, don’ts and must haves. The building is 12X12 and the area I’ve marked off for the run is 12x40. Planning on starting...
Designing my first coop and I keep reading that the coop MUST be well ventilated, yet at the same time, you don't want it to be drafty. My coop will be 12X12. What's the best way to make sure it's well ventilated, but not drafty? Seems it may be tricky to achieve one without the other.
Thanks for the advise! Nice to hear from a fellow KY boy. Not only do I have hawks to worry about, but I’ve got a pair of Bald Eagles that nest on our farm also.
