Hello, we live in southern Ohio. We have Americanas, rooster is a blue wheaton americana. He is a busy guy! We also have full blooded Ee's. They lay brown, pink, green and blue eggs. We have some cochins and some plymouth rocks. All mixes as we haven't got those girls thier own...
I give him about a half teaspoon every other week or so....sometimes skipping a week here and there. In large doses it does cause anemia. But in small doses, moderated well it keep the fleas from biting and is way less toxic in my opinion. But like you said the bugs sure don't like the way...

We free range in the winter. they will dig in snow just like they do in the leaves. We make a little trail 1 shovel pass . They remember where all their favorite spots r .If its to cold they just stay in the coop some might just stay in. Birds r fun to watch thanks Troy
i know lot better words out there lol iv had chickens for 27 yrs off an on but i never saw one or looked lol my wife said she saw it i thought she was crazy just cusiouse she thinks its like a rabbit lol
