Are you sure they aren't laying when you let them free range? I had thought I found all my girls hiding places, then the other day,my DD found a nest with 6 eggs in it. So,I've learned not to only look in their normal hiding places, but everywhere that they have access to.
My Cornish X hens have 1 Roo with them. They are laying eggs every day,and ALL of them so far have been fertile. They started laying at 16 weeks. Most of them are double yokers. I have 2 that are wanting to sit on their eggs, but I won't let them. It's just getting to cold for me to have...
I really wouldn't worry about them freezing as much as I would something getting them. Your winters are about the same as ours. In our last house that we lived in,when we moved in there were little Banty chickens everywhere. They didn't have a coop or anything. They all roosted in the trees...
If you are wanting them to lay only in their nest boxes, might be the best thing to keep the locked up for a while. But,even letting them out at 12 or so is not saying the won't lay some where else. My hens hardly ever lay before 2 PM. Mine free range and never lay in their nest boxes...
Wonder why alot of people think this? I have had 2 "old timers" tell me this when I was talking about getting rid of all roosters and just keeping my hens. They both said the same thing...you gotta have a Roo to get eggs. I just smiled. Didn't want to make them feel like they weren't giving...
Mine have been free ranging since they had gotten all of their feathers. Mine started laying at 16 weeks old. (mine aren't the same breed as yours though) I'm going to say that yours probably are laying, but just not in their nest boxes. Mine rarely ever lay an egg before 2 pm. Mine are evening...
My chickens roost in their pen. It's a fenced in big area and at one end, where their roosts are,we have that covered on 3 sides...leaving the one side open for them to come and go. So,their whole coop is outside. I had been going out every other day and cleaning up under their roost. I use...
Nope, cutting their feed will NOT slow down their growth. Mine are pets, and alls I have ever feed them was once in the AM and once in the PM...rest of the day has always been free range.(they don't get fed much then either...they are all through eating within 5 minutes) When it came time for my...
Alls I gotta say to all of you that DO keep chickens in the house...better be careful if you have children...someone might call and report you. About 5-6 years ago, when my son was 3 and DD just born,DHR showed up at my house. Said they had a complaint that we had chickens in the house, and they...
I can't tell you how many of those I got when my girls first started laying several weeks ago. Once I got several of them,I started adding oyster shell to their feed. Now,2 weeks later,I haven't gotten one in quite a while.
Wow...50 #s for less than 10.00...great deal. I bought some a couple weeks ago...had to pay 6.00 for a 5 # bag. I nearly didn't get it,but my hens have started laying soft shell eggs,so knew they needed it.
I was just fixing to make a post about this. My girls are free rangers and even though they have REALLY nice nesting boxes in their coop, they have NEVER laid inside there. So,every day I'm out searching the yard(and my yard is HUGE LOL) Last night about 6 PM I searched all over and found...
