Duluthralphie - I don't post in here much but couldn't help but notice that your profile says you are from Orrock - I grew up there! Which might not seem significant to anyone else unless you know how small Orrock is lol. (Or was, IDK maybe it's bigger now, but in the 80's, early 90's there was...

Quote: I'm doing the nipple watering system. I wonder if that will help with that? Not sure if any dribbles down when they drink that way, as I've never looked close enough to see. Hmmm.

Thank you very much for considering it! I am in contact with Triplell and I think she's going to hook me up. :) If I end up being a little short, I remembered that Big Lots sells plastic tarps for really cheap so between the two I think I've got it covered. Thank goodness for the people on this...

Thank you! I was just wondering if dog food bags would work! I'll check some neighboring farms as well.

Well shoot. I just threw like, 4 of them away that had been piling up haha. At this point I definitely won't be able to build up enough of a supply before winter, but what a great idea!

Can you elaborate on what you mean by 'poly feed sacks'? Sorry I'm very green...

I was also wondering if anyone could fill me in what you do for coop insulating? We bought the insulation, and were looking at having to buy plywood to cover it because I was under the impression that anything else they would just peck apart...but someone on here mentioned foam board. Does that...

Hey Everybody - Just wanted to let you all know that we've got 3 extra beautiful 4 month old Wellsummer Roos (From Minniechick Mama/Prairie Chick Poultry) that we plan to cull along with our meatbirds in about a month. They are such beautiful and easy going guys though that I just thought I'd...

Can I skip the run altogether? Please help me figure this out.

naadarien - I don't really understand what you're saying about the $400 run saving me cost of food. They will free range nearly all the time, regardless of whether or not I build the run. I'm just trying to decide if adding to the 4X10 run that I already have is even necessary if I decide to go...

I have 11 birds. We have a 4X10 run as I mentioned and are planning to cover it soon. The reason I'm asking though, is that the run we have now is small and was supposed to be temporary. We were orignally going to expand it to be about 150 square feet. However after doing a cost analysis on...

Hi all - I tried searching the thread for this topic but kept on getting a bunch of random stuff instead. I have a question about coop size in cold climates - Right now I have 3.6 square feet per bird which has been plenty because they free range all day. I thought I had done PLENTY of research...

Can I skip the run altogether? Please help me figure this out.

Sourlans - I could keep the 'temporary' run in tact...and maybe even expand it as time goes on perhaps... Colrad - couldn't I just set the time for a little later in the morning then? For the door to open after normal egg-layin time? Or would that be too late for them to have to sit in the coop?

Can I skip the run altogether? Please help me figure this out.

So we are newbies with 12, 4 month old Welsummers. We free range all day long and shut them up in their coop at night. We have a rooster and a large livestock guard dog and so far we have had zero problems with free ranging on our 10 acres. There's almost always someone here as we work opposite...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I know they say there is no such thing as a dumb question, but I'm pretty sure this is one. Anyway would any of you be willing to check out this link and tell me what size of these legbands I would need for 3 month old welsummers - I can't figure out if I should get size 8 or 10 at this point...

It is my first time...I do understand about the sleeping but I've noticed they seem to mimic eeach others behavior and haven't before seen one so sleepy and unresponsive to the others as they are all running around. I'm just afraid if he's under the weather like this for a couple days, the...
