My nephew stepped on one of my 2 week old chicks - he realized it halfway through so didn't completely step on it...but I think he hurt the chick where the wing meets the body...or in that general area. I think this because right after it happened he sort of limped away with that wing hanging out. It's not hanging out anymore, and I can't perceive any apparent injury but he is moving around very little and when he does it's very slow. I am so distraught by this...especially because this one is my son's favorite chick.
I had the chicks out in the grass for a little fresh air and foraging and all the kids came running over and as I was trying to get them to sit down... it happened. I had him separate for a while but basically in a small terrarium within the brooder - as I have only one brooder lamp at the moment. He seemed to be doing okay, he's sitting up (rather than laying) but he just looks really sleepy. I tried putting him back in with the others because I was afraid he wasn't getting warm enough, and there wasn't much room left for the others under the light. But they are all running around eating and he's just standing there dozing.
I'm afraid they are going to start pecking him or something. Is this something I have to worry about at this young of an age or do you think they'll leave him alone? I don't want to keep him separate if I don't have to, as I don't have extras of anything (live and learn) But I don't want him to get ganged up on in the middle of the night either.
Any thoughts?

Is he over heated when he was seperated? How long has it been since it happened?

Is this your first time raising chicks/the first chick injury you've had? Chicks sleep a good portion of the day.

It is my first time...I do understand about the sleeping but I've noticed they seem to mimic eeach others behavior and haven't before seen one so sleepy and unresponsive to the others as they are all running around. I'm just afraid if he's under the weather like this for a couple days, the others may recognize that and start to peck him. I don't think he over heated, but I'll go dip his beak a few times and see if that perks him up a bit.

I'd keep him seperated. It would be better to be safe than sorry. If they gang up on him to the point where he bleeds and they get a taste for blood than you might end up with cannibals.

Is his "quarantine" area directly under the heat lamp? And maybe give him some stimulation, i.e. perches peices of straw etc.

When you do introduce them try either slipping him in at night. Or when ever your brood tends to sleep.(my last hatch slept about mid day and cried all night.) Or maybe when they are out side in the yard. If you have an issue out side move them to a new unrecognized area then the more aggressive ones aren't so bold.
