UPDATE: We've actually entirely moved the chick and mum into the main area. We put them together supervised at first, and Bob (the lone hen) didn't even care :) She just wanted to be by Buckbeak (mumma hen). So they are happily together
Yep, she had. Thank goodness. Just hoping the good egg laying continues, and that she is getting enough calcium now, and that it wasn't a one time good egg deal.
If the problem continues than it will probably have to be a problem for the vet. I did go and talk to them a little earlier, and they said what everyone else is saying, that she needs more calcium, which is what we are working on at the moment.
If she doesn't get better from the added calcium...
Originally we had two Orpington hens (9 months old), both bought from the same place and have basically never been separated. However, Buckbeak (the hen 'higher' in the pecking order) went broody, and now has a chick. She's been separated from Bob (the other hen) for the last 7ish weeks, but has...
Yep, recently I have started putting a container of Oyster shell out. She will eat from it if we actually pick up the container and put it in front of her, lol. I don't know if she eats from it otherwise, I would hopefully assume so.
Our chickens do free range all day, they only get closed up during the night. However, I probably will stop giving them the treats for a little while. Thank you for your help.
The treats that I give her and a scratch and lay mixture, and I give them very sparsely (less than a hand full a day (some days they don't even get any)- so literally a few pinches)- but thats now. I am confused though, because the packet that the scratch and lay mixture comes in says that they...
It's a scratch and lay mix, so a mixture of corn, barley, wheat, oats, pellets, etc. It also has calcium (oyster shell) in it. And less than a hand full per day.
Thank you :) She actually laid an egg today (the day after the mishap), which is confusing because its the first one in about a week.
The shell did look to be mostly intact, the end which was dragging on the ground for a short while did have a hole that was leaking yolk. But the end that was still attached to her looked to be fine.
Bob doesn't like to eat 'new' things, shes a little scaredy cat. So to give her the tablet how...
It easily came out, it was basically an elongated egg (but soft) filled with yolk. She didn't flinch or making any distressed noises when we removed it. And is already back at foraging around the place. We also offered her some more oyster shell grit, which she ate a small amount of. Sorry, I...
A few weeks ago our chicken, Bob, a 9 month Orpington x, was having trouble with laying eggs. For the first little while she was only laying yolk, and a little bit of the shell (which was very soft), so we started giving her less treats and instead gave her more layers feed. She then went back...
