One of our Australorps is missing the feathers over her crop and it is flaming red. It has been like this for several days. She is eating/behaving normally otherwise. I have no ideas so would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks
Hi, I live in New Brunswick, Canada. We kept chickens for the first time this winter. Our coop is raised and insulated with styrafoam between the walls. We have Speckled Sussex and Silver Laced Wyandottes. There were only a couple of very, cold, wet days that the chickens weren't outside. Other...
I have 5 hens and a rooster, 3 Silver laced Wyandott hens, 2 Sussex, speckled hens and roo. One of the Sussex girls seems to have lost the outer feathers on her chest and neck; no skin showing, just fluffy under feathers. She is fine other wise, eating and behaving normally, just looks a mess...
Good to know Deanner. I live in New Brunswick and this will be our first winter having chickens. The coop is insulated but we had no plans to add heat and had actually heard it is better not to. Managed to keep the ducks from freezing last winter, hoping to have good luck with the chickens too.
I have done lots of clicker training with my dogs and heard stories of people clicker training chickens, although I have not tried it myself. I think it sounds like a good idea. I think it would work.
Welcome from a fellow Canadian and chicken newbie! We are in the process of building our chicken house now. The next boxes will be inside the coop, off the floor but with an outside door to allow access from the back side of the boxes. Have seen pictures of a few coops built this way and it...
What kind of ducks? We ate Indian runner eggs all spring until we lost one of the girls and let the other keep some eggs to set. Fed duck egg quiche to our friends:) It was delicious!
I have Indian Runners and I deffinately would NOT recommend them for what you are looking for. A friend has call ducks and they might be a better choice.
I would say she is very lucky. I agree with the previous poster, keep her wounds well washed (hibitaine works well or even epsom salts and water), keep her warm and dry and quite. Also honey is very healing and won't harm her if she happens to ingest it. Best of luck!

My ducks all go in their houses at night on their own. We did have to heard the runners in for the first little while. The khaki campbells have always just gone right in. We have to keep everything locked up at night, too many wild things lurking close by. We even lost one of our runners in the...
We started out last year with 4 Indian Runner ducklings, hoping for females for eggs. Turned out to be 2 and 2 which wasn't ideal but was ok. We lost one of the males in the fall and one of the females this spring. Someone took home take out. We went to a poultry sale this spring hoping to find...
Mine are wild for yogurt and they also love leaf lettuce from the garden. I threw in some parsley for them a couple of days ago and it's all stll there so I guess they are not fans of thAt.
