Mine usually lay by noon. Sometimes we'll have a straggler. I only have 3 laying right now so they don't get too crowded in there. It is funny how they like to use the same nesting box. Whichever Silkie is broody at the time will move herself to whichever box they used that day to keep those...
2 eggs from 3 RIRs. We have 4 BRs and 3 SLWs that are 24 weeks old this week. I can't wait until they start laying! I've seen a couple soft shelled eggs in the bottom of the coop so I think they're getting close!
I agree with karlamaria - feed as a treat only. We have some old english muffins we bought in bulk a while back. I pull a few out of the freezer each weekend as a treat. They eat them up. Cornbread is also a favorite of our flock.
I went to a different feed store today to pick up some layer crumbles and all they offered were Kent products. I picked up a 50lb bag of their Home-Fresh Extra Egg 16. Does anyone currently feed this to their laying hens? Have you noticed any difference in performance between this and other...
One of our RIRs gives us 2 or 3 of these babies a week. They are such a nice surprise.
She is 9 months old. Anyone know if she'll continue laying these or will she eventually stop giving us 2 or 3 a week?
We have 2 Silkie hens. Right now our black one is broody and setting all the time. She has been for a few weeks now. Before that, our partridge hen was the broody one. Since she's been off the nest she's laid 2 eggs - in a matter of 3 weeks.
What do other Silkie owners experience with egg...
I'm glad to hear citrus is ok! I have some just past ripe naval oranges I bought from an FFA student last month. I hate throwing them out and was hoping the chickens could have them. We'll see how the girls like them tonight.
We have a partridge Silkie, Nutmeg, who is a broody little biddy. She sat for probably 2 months before she decided she was done. For a while she sat on wooden eggs that I used to show everyone where to do their thing. After I pulled those out she sat on nothing for weeks. We kept one rooster...
Aggressive,Friendly,Flighty,Easily handled,Calm,Noisy is how they were described...
We have 3 RIRs and I would agree with Friendly, Easily Handled, Calm and Noisy (somewhat). Fancy Nancy, our alpha hen, can be a bit noisy, but the other 2 aren't at all.
Our 3 RIRs are just now coming into lay. They are 23 weeks old and we've had 3 good eggs out of them in the past 2 weeks. We keep finding soft shelled eggs in the coop. I think we've seen 5 now.
How long can we expect to see soft shelled eggs? Are they happening because they're new layers...
