I have four chickens - golden comet, black sex link, and 2 RIR. My golden comet is a few weeks older than the others. She is around 18 weeks old. Three days ago, I found the first egg in the nesting box - it had a very slight crack. They eat Purina Layena and I offer oyster shells as well...

So my Golden Comet just laid her first egg but it is slightly cracked. It is not cracked all the way through, just a little on the outer shell. So --- is it ok to eat? How do I prevent this from happening again? Thanks!

Thanks for the input. I have my eye on a sunnier part of the yard right now. It is kind of close to our fence, so I was thinking of adding some privacy hedges there. I only have 4 girls, though.
