After finding out that there is more to chickens then a barbaque drumstick, I decided one day that I might be interested in raising a few chickens. As with anything that I do, I had to do my homework first. I started asking people that I know about raising chickens and to my delight, I recieved...
i rescued a baby black australop yesterday and could use some serious advice on how to treat and repair. It appears the the baby chick was handled very roughly and may have a broken leg as a result. is there anything I can do to help it, I actually recieved a pair of them, one roo, one baby...
Thank you so much, and thank you for showing the pic. I now have a new RIR roo... and the cool part is, I had to put him in with my other 3 roos and he (I named the new RIR, George) went into the coop tonight just like he had been there all along and he didnt try to fight with the other 3...
I have a friend who gave me a rooster today, it looks like a RIR, has the green tail feathers, nice deep red color on the bird, but what is throwing me off is the comb. its a rose come and it hangs off to the side. I'm guessing the age of the bird is somewhere between 6 months and a year. He is...
Thanks for the replys. I was really wondering what he was doing, other then just taking a nap on top of some eggs. I just didnt know if he decided to kick back in this box reading his paper and watching the kids or trying to do some secret rooster thing in the middle of the night.
Lol just kidding , but seriously I did find him sitting on 4 eggs tonight. Is this normal behaviour for roo? Is he giving the ladiies a break, or did he just happen to find the box that had the eggs and decide to make himself comfy?
My CX started laying at about 5 months. I switched them over to layer feed at 4 1/2months. Once they started laying, I introduced the roo to the coop and left him in thiere. He is a White Plymoth rock. With 4 hens I get usually 2 eggs aday. I have incubated as many as 10 at a time and the...
I switch all my birds to layer feed at 16 weeks and have never had a problem. I currently have 116 chickens and they are healthy and the girls give me lots of eggs.
I am sad to report that I lost one of my chicks today. I dont know why. It was the smallest one of the group. but it seemed to be doing good up until today. I went out this morning and noticed it was just laying around and not active like the others, then this afternoon I found it laying there...
I am seriously considering purchasing a wood chipper to start making my own bedding. I realize that the payback on a chipper would take a long time considering that the bags of pine shavings at the feed mill are only $5.50 each, but I am planning on having chickens a long time and it is a pain...

As per post #1, you said you originally set 46.
That is correct. I originally set 46 and after day 14 candling I had to pull 7 out for infertility, leaving 39 and I got 36 of those to hatch.

Great hatch! With the leg, what do you mean? Is it splayed?
What is splayed? The chick lays there with the leg spread out and it cant seem to stand up on that leg.
Just thought that I would post my results. I had 36 out of 39 hatch and are doing well. The 3 eggs left arent doing anything at all. I wll give them a couple of days to see. I do have one chick that looks like it has a bum leg. Any suggestions on what to do with that?
Had my first hatch at 2:13am.. still have 38 to go. 12 are pipped and 1 more getting ready to zip;. no pics. sorry... dam camera phone. good luck to everyone tonight and happy new years
