I cannot believe it.....this is happening to me too and I am also in Ohio! 48 hours ago exactly, I went outside and found a 1 year old hen dead in the chicken run. All the girls we active and eating and happy that morning and by 5pm she was dead. Now, another hen is just sitting in the run...
Hello All,
I have looked around the site, but still unsure..............I have a 6 month old Australorpe hen that has been odd the past 2 days. I keep finding her in the nesting box for long periods of time, while out in the yard she scratches a bit and walks around. Many time I find her in...
I had a girl lay today...she was so loud after she laid it that it sounded like a rooster!! My 10 year old daughter and I were pretty wide eyed at the drama!! My daughter may be thinking twice about having a baby!! LOL:lau
I sound irresponsible, but I have NEVER seen them pick at him. Just see the result! We spend a ton of time with them..petting....wandering the yard with them...and have not seen him get picked. The others all look fine. He is segregated because of the blood I didn't want anyone around him...
It really suprised me because we got them all as chicks together! From day one in the box, brooder..everything. We are trying the small run right next to them.....
Thank you for that idea about the very different looking breeds. I did some checking around and you are correct. There was literature out there that supports that idea. I have no clue how I missed that when I thought I read just about anything written about raising chickens, chicken care...
I am sorry if this has been covered...I looked around the site and cannot find info. I have 13 18 week old australorpes and they have pecked out our Golden Polish roosters tailfeathers and now he is bloody! I have more than enough indoor and outdoor space per chicken, good feed (proper age)...
Thank you, everyone. I put it out there---sliced to keep the peace----they ate all the seeds and stringy stuff, but not the flesh. Hmmmm...kinda uneventful. hahahaha They ate the seeds and broke them into pieces themselves. I was worried that the seeds were going to be too big.
I read...
When I give pumpkin to my chickens do I just slice it and give it to them like I do my cantelopes? I cut it into wedges and leave it to them---mostly so there are enough wedges to prevent hoarding and leaving others out. The pumpkin seeds just seem so large to just lay it all out there......
Thank you, TigerLilly. You are right and we will. He has been very, very mild and behaved so far, but we are aware that we need to keep an eye on him. Our 10 year old has trained them to follow her around and eat out of her hand--but we will watch him.
Mine go crazy for mealworms for sure...yogurt, cantelope, watermelon, pasta, rice, whole heads of varieties of lettuces.. NO on the bananas.......disturbingly they went nuts over a rotisserie chicken carcass!
So, I was beginning to wonder if our 14 week old Golden Polish rooster was not going to be super "manly" with our 14 week old Australorpe hens........Well, today the hubby was holding a hen for the neighbor girl to pet the hen. The hen was calm and docile, but making that "purring" kind of low...
Hey!! Update! I made this "concoction" tonight and the ladies gobbled it up! They will be going to bed on this cold rainy night with a nice full belly!
