Chickens sleeping on top of coop

I think mine were scared of something. I started putting them in every night and locking them in, also upgraded their roost. After a week or 2 they started going in by themselves.

I Would Say The Ventilation Is good. The door in the front is always open and there is a small screened window on the side.

Thanks for everyone's replies, sorry I have been very busy and havent had a chance to reply. The coop is about 4ftx4ft and the roost is an old wooden mop handle. I only have 3 hens, so the coop isnt too big. Whats funny is that they still go in to lay. I may try to add a bigger roost. Maybe...

They have 1 bar inside. I only have 3 chickens. Maybe that's the problem, we leave their food and water outside the coop. They're spoiled and want out in the mornings when we lock them up. I'm not worried about predators here where I live.

Chickens sleeping on top of coop

After I changing the hay last time in the chicken coop, they started sleeping on top of the coop. They've always slept inside and when I changed the hay I used the same one. I changed the hay then we left the coop door open and went out of town for a few days. The day we got home we noticed...

Thanks for the support. Yes, Barred Rock sounds familiar. I'll try to get a better picture from my wife and post. My phone takes terrible pics and they don't let me get as close as my wife. My wife handles them almost daily.

    Possible broody

Thank you for the replies. That is a relief. We only have 3 chickens and their purpose is egg laying. Should I put the golf balls back in the nest?

Thank you for the welcome notes. Yes, my name is Michael. I can't remember the breed names but here's a pic. I don't want a broody hen and according to the replies only post, she's not broody but just new to laying.

    Possible broody

Help, I may have a broody hen. We have 3 hens that are 20 weeks old. One of my hens laid her first egg on Saturday. We took the egg and later he was after my wife clucking and looking everywhere for her egg. My wife put the egg back and she pulled it towards her and sat on it. A few minutes...
