purchase coop, new york city area

My only suggestion is to check craigslist if you want a prebuilt. Be very, very careful about ordering any coop over the net or off ebay. They are notoriously flimsy, poorly designed, and much smaller than the pictures make them look. Personally I think you're better off using that money to...

    4 square feet per chicken?

4 sq.ft. per bird in the house is very generous. Many people have 2-3 sq.ft. in the house with no problems at all. The run is where they spend the majority of their time so just make sure they have enough room in the run.

    Omega - 3?

Most articles I've read about Omega 3 says that the beneficial form comes from fish sources, not the flaxseed or plant based form. So really, in my opinion, the Omega 3 in layer feed is just a gimmick. You're better off just eating fish. I think eggs are healthy enough and don't need to be...

    Started on new non-gmo food!

Well, a quick google search found this on Rumorskiller which seems to call in to question the credibility of this information. Lots of junk science seems to make it into the public domain without any scientific peer review. Of course I don't know how accurate Rumorskiller is either but I...

    Layer or Grower

Assuming they are all the same age and should start laying soon, go ahead and switch them all.

    Best type of feeder?

I used a homemade plastic bucket feeder for years and never liked the amount of spillage. A couple of months ago I bought a Little Giant metal feeder and love it. Some things are worth spending a little money on, and frankly, it's not that much money considering how long you'll have it.

What feed to feed my hens?

I agree with the above... your hens are spent. I replaced 5 hens over the winter who were almost 3 years old. All my new hens are now producing good hard-shelled eggs on Purina Layena.

Is it okay to use a rusty water dispenser?

I'm sure it's fine if that's all you have. Personally I'm not a big fan of using hand me down equipment. If you can afford a new waterer then I would get one when you have a chance. If not, then just use what you have and don't sweat it.

what kind and when yo change feeds

You don't need to give them grit if you're just feeding the chick starter. As for medicated feed, you can feed medicated chick starter/grower up until laying age when you switch over to layer feed. If you don't want to do that, just finish out what you have left of the medicated and then...

Need help sorting out all the advice of what to feed Chickens!

I would keep it simple and just feed them commercial feed as their primary feed source. Chick starter up until laying age and then layer pellets. You can supplement with table scraps or fresh greens if you want. You could also throw them some scratch grains once a day.

    Eglu Cube by Omlet

I think most everyone who has an Eglu loves it and I wouldn't say it's only for "first timers". The only comment I remember reading about assembly is that you should budget more time than what is recommended. Other than that I haven't read any complaints about how they go together. You'll...
