She has always been with the flock and they are now attacking her. They are about 1 1/2 to 2 years old.
Yes they can see her in the temporary run. Its about 20 feet away from their run.
No they don't free range. The run is too small but it was built when the ground was frozen and its all...
We have mixed breeds of RIR, Leghorns and silkies with a silky rooster.
We have one hen where if she gets out of the nest box to get food or water the entire flock tries to kill her. I'm not talking pecking at her. I'm talking trying to pin her down and do major damage to her. For the...
We have 1 chicken that is totally terrified to leave the nest box and is immediately attacked by all the other chickens. Today I took her out and held her to try and spray some blue coat on areas on her that looked red or injured. While holding her, a steady stream of slightly tan liquid came...
We have mixed breeds of chickens. Leghorns, Rhode Island Reds, silkies, etc. I inherited them.
There is one leghorn that spends most of her time in the nest box. I was thinking she was broody. However, whenever she gets out of the box to eat or drink almost the entire flock of chickens...
Oh, so it is broodiness? I originally thought she was broody but then when I saw her getting attacked I thought it might be something else. If this is broody behavior then that at least gives me an idea of how to approach it.
Thank you!
Hi All,
I inherited chickens this spring. Its all mixed breeds. 2 silkies, some leghorns and I think Rhode Island reds. 1 of the leg horns was, I thought, broody. She would stay in the nest box egg or not all day. I kept taking her out and putting her in the run (where the water is) and...
We have a chicken feeder that looks something like the photo below. We have it sitting on some bricks in the coop. We feed layer pellets and I'm seeing a ton of wasted food laying on the floor of the coop mixed in with the wood chips. I stopped feeding the chickens hoping if they got hungry...
Don't let anyone steer you away from putting wire down for the floor if you have predators in the area. I put down 2 layers of wire and then took the skid steer and dumped about 5 inches of sand on top of the wire. Even when the chickens dig/scratch they don't get anywhere near being close to...
birds4kids,
I saw a youtube video where someone was using one of those large 50 gallon totes that you can get from Menards. If they start getting too crowded in the pool, you could maybe split them between the pool and a tote. But hopefully the weather will warm up and you can get them...
The run isn't large enough but when we got the coop the ground was still frozen and I couldn't put posts in. Nor were we sure this is where we wanted the coop to sit permanently. I will likely build about a 12 x 16 coop with a larger run when I have the time. We only had about 2 days notice...
Sounds like you're having a lot of fun. Who knows...maybe your wife will become a farm girl after this! I haven't had time to even think about meat birds. I want to get some but I just don't have the time right now.
Thanks Donrae, some good info there. We're getting 9 eggs a day from 12 hens and are very happy with that. We got the birds for free from someone my daughter worked with. Next spring they will be starting their 3rd year. I'm assuming we'll probably be needing to order chicks next spring...
