Hi there fellow BYC - this is my first time with chickens - I've had such fun growing up these chicks! I got a cochin bantam assortment (plus one leghorn) from McMurray on Oct 6, so now they are about 10 weeks old. This golden laced one I sure hope is a pullet, but what's up with the red comb...

    Bay Area BYCers!

Oh my, I would love for you to breed them too! Being in a city I can't keep a rooster, so I have to vicariously support breeding projects and rare breeds. I'm pretty new to chickens - I loved raising chicks I have now - and it's just fasinating to see how the chicks grow up to adults...

mycutekitties, How good to have a nest box project to work on while your dwarf eggs hatch. I sure hope you can post some pictures of them - just how small are dwarf chicks? Are they much smaller than a Japanesse bantam? Are these the Olandsk Dwarfs from Greenfire? I'm just crazy for bantam...

Happy Thanksgiving to me!!! (Advice needed)

aw! I love my leghorn pullets, they are more forward and interested in me (really, it's about the FOOD), than my bantam cochins of the same age. They're 9 weeks old and pure white now, but they were pure yellow as chicks. So cute!

    Loner or lonely?

Here's the scene this morning - leghorns coming out to say good morning and the black frizzle below where she spent the night. Chicks get a play space too during the day, but note who's still in the very back. Mystery does come out and play and snack, but usually is the first to run away...

    Loner or lonely?

I have 5 assorted bantam cohins and 2 leghorns (all 8 weeks old), but the black frizzle is the slowest of all to mature. This "ugly duckling" is, of course, also at bottom of the pecking order. Two days ago, I rearranged the brooder coop, so now they can "go up stairs" at night. 6 of them...

Training chicks to use watering nipples

side note - the drips are from the chicks pecking it, not it leaking.

Training chicks to use watering nipples

oh, and I think they would learn to use it at even one or two days old. I put a plastic drip tray below to catch the drips and keep the wood pellet bedding from turning to wet sawdust so quickly just below the nipples.

Training chicks to use watering nipples

I switched my to the nipple at about 2 weeks and yup, it took them all of 15 seconds. It happened so quick, I had just steped away to switch the laundry and they already were at it. I imagine it went like this... "Something new here? Let's peck it! Oh, water!?!" "Hey, what are you pecking...
