Hello! I need to find a new home/s for two handsome boys. One is a pure "Bantam Cochin" aka "Pekin". He is indeed very handsome, about a year old, very vigilant and a good protector of his ladies. He doesn't like to be caught, but he doesn't "bolt" either. He will sit calmly in your lap...
I went outside this morning to feed my 3 lovely barred rock ladies, my wonderful rooster and my 2 teenagers. To my horror, they were ALL DEAD! Feathers everywhere, no blood. Bodies were intact, no heads missing or gutted or anything like that.
The bottom latch of the run gate was open...
Thank you all!!!!! I know I gave lots of info.... wanted to put all the facts in to give as little room for error as possible. (Sorry...science teacher here....!) I have put the bully Blynken in a quarrantine cage inside the run. Noddy was nervous at first, but now has settled down. Blynken...
I'm in Central Florida, btw.....
I have 3 PR hens, and until this week, all have been incredibly awesome. They are friendly- we've handled them since chicks- they'll come running and will jump into my lap when they see a treat bag. They are definitely characters! Very talkative, very...
Hi everyone:
I've got a chicken psychology issue, rather complex, but it has us all here baffled.
I've had 3 sweet Plymouth Rock hens for almost a year now, since they were chicks. Always got along great- no squabbles whatsoever. I named them Wynken, Blynken, and Nod - or "Noddy"...
Since the majority of folks in my generation and my daughter's generation have become far removed from farm life, or even seeing where our food comes from, you shouldn't be too surprised that many folks have not much idea about what chickens may swallow. I bet most non-poultry people don't have...
So what can she do? I've got the same issue with my Barred Rock girls. They are laying, eat me out of house and home, but are thin. I've tried deworming them this week.
I'm also in central florida (Ocala), and my chickens are in 100% sand. I get shells too. It shouldn't be an issue. My problem is that I seem to have built my coop on top of what was the previous home-owner's trash pile many years ago. Apparently they just dumped more sand on top of broken...
As a biologist focused on ornithology , I think I can say with some degree of accuracy that feathers are made of the protein KERATIN. Essentially the same material as our fingernails, chicken beaks and claws.
Common sense. Keep your birds healthy, keep the coop and run clean of feces and stake food. Keep rats and other vermin out. Use Separate pair of shoes for the coop , ad don't bring them inside your house. Disinfect them with bleach frequently. And always wash your hands, arms, face , and...
I would never dunk an animal in jello. We've got ants ants ants here in Flda, and I think the sweetness in the jello, no matter how diluted, would attract the ants. Don't want ants swarming all over my chicks or chickens! Just a thought.
