Buff brahma x barred rock eggs

I have a Buff Brahma dad and barred rock mama. Just recently hatched a completely black chick at 28 days incubation under Chancleter surrogate. I almost threw the egg out after 23 days but the mama was so faithful to those eggs that I waited. So glad I did. 3 eggs hatched. One on day 21 (Buff...

    New flock

Mrs K, Thanks for your advice. I've had only one experience a few years ago with a hen who hatched 4 eggs, I died after a couple of days but I had the please of watching her mother them for 6 weeks at which time she said "see ya" and they were on their own, eventually integrated into the flock...

    New flock

So I had a broody hen who started collecting eggs. After a few days, I marked 8 or so eggs under her. She stayed faithful and at day 20 I decided to move her into our brooding coop along with her eggs. The next day 1 chick hatched. A cockeral. She kept setting on the eggs and a few days later I...

Your area is more densely populated than Jackson. I originally didn't want roosters but after getting an Ameracauna pullet and finding out the second was a cockerel, we decided to keep it and let them breed. Unfortunately, those were lost. So now I'm starting a new flock.

Jackson has alot of farms so even though I'm in a residential area, we all have 1 acre. I could have a horse if I wanted to. LOL No complaints so far!:)

No, thanks. 2 is enough for me. I may have to get more hens to accomodate them.

I'm in Jackson. Nothing in the books. Thankfully! I'm on an acre, too. That helps. My neighbor has 3 or 4 roosters but only 1 or 2 crow. Only 1 of mine crows.
