Opinions and Experiences with keeping cats in coop

Glad your kitties are doing well, and seem to be doing a great job at keeping the mice away! I brought home a kitten in November, with every intention of him being an outdoor cat. He was about 8 weeks old at the time. I set him up in the coop with a dog house, dog play pen, etc., and he must...

    Molting Ameraucana

I have an Ameraucana of unknown age that seems like she has been molting since we got her (Late August). She was giving us one egg every other day or so. She really started molting a few weeks ago (sparse feathers on her neck, back) and has stopped laying all together. She has also recently...

Opinions and Experiences with keeping cats in coop

Thank you for the advice on bringing them home! Like I said, I'm not ready for a house cat, and wasn't sure how to make the little guy an outdoor only kitty. I think I finally have my husband convinced that we need a coop cat and will be getting a kitten from the neighbor in the next day or so...

Opinions and Experiences with keeping cats in coop

I was a vet tech for many years, and, yes, calico tend to have an attitude problem! THey are always at their worst at the vet's office, and will take every opportunity to swipe, scratch or bite! But, there was always few calicos that were sweet. And tuxedos tend to be the sweetest.

Opinions and Experiences with keeping cats in coop

When you brought your 3 boys home to live in the coop, did you just put them out there and hope they saw that as their new home? I, too, am having a rodent problem in my coop. I recently lost my kitty unexpectedly, and I'm not ready for a "house cat" yet, but I think we would benefit from a coop...

    Pullet or Broody?

After posting this thread, I went out to the coop, and lo and behold, there was a pullet egg in one of the nesting boxes!

    Pullet or Broody?

She hasn't pulled any feathers or started purring. So, she could be a pullet! That's exciting for us! Thank you! And thank you for welcoming me! I love this website, there's so much wonderful advice for a newbie like me

    Pullet or Broody?

We rescued 7 hens a few weeks ago, and one of them is a Buff Orpington, who I thought was no longer laying. I've never seen her in the nest boxes, and I'm getting 3 eggs a day from hens I know are laying. Today, the Buff Orpington has been in and out of all the nest boxes, could she be a pullet...

    Rescued chickens

Thank you for the reply! After I posted this, I went to open the coop door, and they were waiting to come outside! They only stay out for a couple minutes, but I think they are starting to get the concept! But I will put treats on the ramp for more encouragement.

    Rescued chickens

We rescued 7 hens and 1 rooster about 10 days ago. They are: 2 Ameraucana, 2 RIRs, 1 Buff Orp, the rooster is a RIR, and we have 2 RIRs that should be laying in a couple months. We really have no idea how old any of them are. Their previous home was not a good one: the guy had too many chickens...
