A Cooper's Hawk was in my chicken enclosure yesterday eating one of my silkies when i got home from work. They cant carry them away, but they dont mind hanging around to eat your chickens.
I also caught a Cooper's Hawk dragging one of my bantams across the ground a few weeks ago -...
i gave her two of my bantam eggs today when i went home for lunch.
She immediatley pulled them under her and gave an official squat.
My gosh.... i think she's broody.

I hope anyway - i forgot to mention that her eggs usually had a little blood on them...
My silkie started acting funny last thursday (feb 12) and wouldnt leave the nest box after friday.
I went out of town (funeral) and when i returned she still was in the same box - i think she left the nest once in a while becasue there was no poo in the nest.
I thought maybe she was egg bound...
Well the run didnt get built over the weekend - but thats what i get for going out of town

Becasue I instictively bolted out of bed and ran outisde at 5 am when i heard ruckus in my chicken coop -without even thinking!!!
My SO (shoeless) and loyal dog accompanied me in a frenzy to the coop where we found one of our silkies in the mouth of a(n) opossum!!!

i guess i didnt exactly pick the right time to start learning chicken. Good thing I like them as pets.
They free range in the back yard (60 x 90') or so..

i just bought two 'used' buffs. But now that i have been lurking around here - i am certain one (or both) of them is vintage. I have had them for 11 days and no eggs.
The scales on her legs are pretty big, and theor toenails are very long.
This chicken stuff is very new to me...like 11...
