    Meaties

In July after the 4H fair, we found out that for the 4H auction, egg layers couldn't be included so we thought we needed to figure out market hens for next years fair. So we went to the local feed store and ordered 25 Cornish X. Raised them on a half/half mix of buckwheat feed & Dumor...

Welcome to our chicken page.... We are first time chicken owners on an acre lot in Minnesota. I was fortunate to move to this community 2 years ago. My kids were country kids in the city. "Wanna be" farmers in a way. With a hopeful heart, I keep buying the lottery tickets !! The kids have been...

    injury or start of infection

There is no sore & it doesn't seem warm so I don't know if soaking is a good idea (in the event of bumble foot) as if it is a sprain, I think that would make it worse. I didn't notice any bruising either. It is so strange as he was out walking around this weekend. I have included some...

Heat lamp or no heat lamp????

We are starting our 3rd year with chickens here in Minnesota. Last winter we had 14 Golden Lced Wyandottes in a 6x8 coop with a 12x15 run area. Coop isn't insulated & we didn't use a heat lamp last winter. I used a tarp over the run area as I learn much what CHICMOM stated - biggest thing is...

Bought Hens, How to get them to go in coop at night?

they will need some training... when we switched out meaties to the outdoor coop - they had no clue what to do at night. They would be huddled in the corner at night when it got dark. We would have to put them into coop. Eventually they got it! Also as "UGCM" said - they may lay in the bushes...

    My coop build

Quote: ha...... Last year when we started, we figured it would take 5 years of eggs from our girls to make up for the "grand" we "sunk" into our coop. Lately I have been sneaking the egg money for coffee money. We will never get ahead on this one. My name certainly isn't TYSON!! We have...

    three legged dog

thanks for the responses. I was thinking arthritis would be something that would affect him. Is there a magic age where that starts happening with dogs? Also any good preventative measures to consider? He has been with us for just a few days. So we are figuring out what he can do and how much...

txs chicmom - I have had other broodies before, just didn't seem to have the picking on like this before. I suppose I am seeing it more since it's nice & I put her out. Before it was winter & I left the broodies alone. Just made certain to get them some feed. My SO is amazingly good to the hens...
