I think you got Cornish Cross meat birds. Attached are pictures of my California White as a chick, pullet, and layer. Her growth was the same as the other chicks I got that day (Olive Egger, Easter Egger and Blue Australorp). As a full grown hen, she has a slighter build than the others, but she...
Your hen is beautiful, but I think she is an Austra White. Austra Whites have black legs and black splashing that is similar to your hen. This is my California White, Cali (Calla Lily). White feathers with a few black specks, bright yellow legs. She lays extra-large pure white eggs. Came from...
Definitely not a California White, though she is a beautiful bird. My California White, Cali, came from Privett Hatchery and was purchased at a feed store. She lays ginormous pure white eggs daily. Very friendly, quiet, curious, fun personality, gets along well with all the hens - great for any...
Those are very beautiful hens, but they are definitely not California Whites. Below are pictures of my California White hen, Cali (Calla Lily), as a chick, pullet and hen. I have to say I LOVE this breed! Cali is friendly, very quiet, an egg laying powerhouse daily laying ginormous pure white...
I highly recommend getting one! Excellent layers of ginormous white eggs, very quiet, non-flighty, holds their own in the flock but is not aggressive towards lower flock members (more of a "no-nonsense, don't mess with me and I won't bother you attitude), very friendly, curious, and fun...
Chipotle is awesome! I am sure that waterline was done right with her supervising! They are definitely an inquisitive breed. Cali follows me around and flies up to my lap to inspect what ever I am reading or eating. It's hysterical. I seriously love this breed!!!
I wanted to follow up in case others are curious about the California White breed. I LOVE THIS BREED! My hen Cali (Calla Lily) is one of my favorites. Even though she's only been laying for 6 weeks her eggs are GINORMOUS (average weight 65 grams) in size and pure white in color. She's a...
Thank you for sharing! She was beautiful! I too am really loving my California White hen. I can't believe how little information there is about the breed. I really appreciate you sharing your experience! Hugs to you for your chicken loss. It's devastating to lose a chicken. :hugs
So far my California White is friendly, fairly quiet, and gets along with the other girls. She holds her own in the flock but is not aggressive. As a chick she was a curious and a leader, definitely putting herself forward and not afraid of the older hens. She tolerates being...
Update on my chicks I purchased at Kahoots in Ramona, California that came from Privett Hatchery since I found very little information about California White chickens when I was doing my research:
Hazel my Oliver Egger as far as I can tell is a cross between a Black Copper Maran Rooster and a...
Hi BYC Community,
My head hen went broody & I grafted chicks to her. At 2 weeks she moved them into the hen house (Omlet Eglu Cube) with my one other hen. At five weeks she stopped mothering them and would nip at them to get them to leave her alone. Now both she and the other hen chase and peck...
Just make sure there is a barrier to keep the separate from your big girls. Without a mama hen to protect them, they are highly likely to be seriously injured or killed. You should wait until they are 5 months old to fully introduce to the flock.
