One of my chicken, a Buff Orphington (sp?) has decided to set on her eggs. She is not yet a year old, we got her as a chick in first part of March. We have three other Buffs and five three year old Austrolops (sp?), and one rooster (Aussie).
My question is should I let her continue to sit on...
My 12 Australorp chicks are now seven weeks old, and they are beginning to attempt regular breakouts of their brooder (a large refrigerator box). None have escaped the garage, but it won't be long I suspect.
The hen house is just about ready. It is 5 X 10 ft., metal roof, wood panel 4...
I suggest that you investigate the "Deep Litter Method". Just do a search for it here on BYC and you will find many variations of this useful method for keeping the hen house smelling good.
Thanks to everyone for the replies.
We live right on the gulf coast, so it's pretty warm, hot in summer, so I built a 10 by 5 ft. hen house. It only freezes 2 - 4 times/year, so the top 2-3 ft. is just hardware cloth. It can cover that with plywood or just tack up clear plastic in winter...
My twelve black Australop hens are now 6 weeks old, coop is almost finished. How and when do I transition them to the new hen house?
Do I just move them to the hen house? How old? Is eight weeks good?

Now she has...

I finally finished her coop. I call it the Chicken palace, and the visiting chicken (named Miss Penny by my wife) is now in residence.
It's pretty big, enough...
Chicken have earlobes? Who knew (not me). I tried to look closely, but saw no white where I suspect earlobes are. Here is another pic. Forgot to add feet are yellow with speckles of blue. Don't hold me to that, I am partly color blind.
We live in South Mississippi. Last week we found a chicken in our backyard. Efforts to find owner have failed so far. I am unable to decide what is the breed. This is the best picture I have been able to get. Any ideas?
My wife and I live in south Mississippi, quite a warm climate. We have large lot in a small coastal town. We are planning to build a chicken coop and order some chicks in March 2014. We can keep about a dozen, mostly for the eggs. The wood for the coop is in the garage and I will be starting...
