    I suggest that you investigate the "Deep Litter Method". Just do a search for it here on BYC and you will find many variations of this useful method for keeping the hen house smelling good.

    Thanks to everyone for the replies. We live right on the gulf coast, so it's pretty warm, hot in summer, so I built a 10 by 5 ft. hen house. It only freezes 2 - 4 times/year, so the top 2-3 ft. is just hardware cloth. It can cover that with plywood or just tack up clear plastic in winter...

    What breed is this wandering chicken?

    Chicken have earlobes? Who knew (not me). I tried to look closely, but saw no white where I suspect earlobes are. Here is another pic. Forgot to add feet are yellow with speckles of blue. Don't hold me to that, I am partly color blind.
