Tell me about your chicken shows

My kids each entered a chicken into their first show at our county fair. Maybe I'm just being overly sensitive, but I don't think we're going to do this fair again. We have to check in the chickens on Wednesday night. They stay there until Sunday night, in a small cage with a wire bottom. They...

    eggs not fertilized despite mating

My Muscovy just started laying eggs and we cracked open the first five and are going to let her sit on the rest and {hopefully} hatch little babies. However, when we cracked open the eggs they appeared to NOT be fertilized. How can this be? There has been PLENTY of mating going on! :) I did read...

Where should my soon-to-be mama duck be?

ok, thanks sourland, I will do that. So, the chickens shouldn't give babies a hard time once they hatch? Mama will protect them well enough?

Where should my soon-to-be mama duck be?

Our Muscovy just started laying her first eggs and I want to let her hatch them herself. Do I keep her in the same coop or move her to her own private brooding area?

I have a trio of Muscovies - of course it was supposed to be one drake and two hens but ended up being one hen and two drakes :( They were hatched last May which makes them 10 months old now and we still haven't gotten any eggs. What gives? I read they can start laying around 5-6 months old but...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Quote: I thought I read somewhere towards the beginning that mold has a hard time growing below 62 and if you are having a lot of mold it might be too warm...??? BUT, the mold I am getting is the soft grey you described so maybe I don't have anything to worry about after all. I'll move my...

    Growing fodder for chickens

How much light does it have and what temperature are you at? It has a good amount of light ( a little direct sunlight but not much - maybe a couple hours) and right now our highs are 60 and lows are around 42.

    Growing fodder for chickens

Quote: Yes it's draining pretty well. Would you still recommend a fan even if I have it outside? That should be good air flow, shouldn't it?

    Growing fodder for chickens

I tried this many times over the summer (I grew indoors so that it wasn't too hot) but I kept getting mold. I would rinse in bleach and still get mold. Then I waited and tried again once the temperatures cooled. Still got mold. And I'm in Vegas where there is almost no humidity UGH! So...
