Hawks and how to stop them!

Unfortunately, I get to add my horror story to the list. We have a 98 sq. ft. covered coop and run area and seven chickens. I also have an uncovered run that adds another 200 sq. ft. Today, I was looking for our Silkie, CottonBall, around the neighbor's yards when I hear the flock go haywire...

Found Chicken! (Can anybody identify breed? Clues about age?)

Final update/question: Found Chicken OK, so she's doing well and is eating/drinking normally. My other chickens escaped the run and came to check her out and it was the most seamless introduction yet. What's more, I was driving around the neighborhood where she was found and I found where...

Found Chicken! (Can anybody identify breed? Clues about age?)

OK, so this is an update. She is no longer exhibiting the odd behavior seen below. I massaged her crop and it is no longer expanded this morning and she's not doing the weird head bob seen in the video below. Also, one of our aracauna mix chickens escaped the run yesterday and was checking out...

Found Chicken! (Can anybody identify breed? Clues about age?)

What's the average size of a Red SL or a Golden Comet? Looking at some debeaked images, she doesn't have the underbite, but the rounded look. Makes her look like a dinosaur. I'm starting to think she has been debeaked as confirmed by your comments.

Found Chicken! (Can anybody identify breed? Clues about age?)

No crowing yet, and she's been in the neighborhood for days. She's so small I can't imagine she'd be a production chicken if she's already full grown – so why would she have a clipped beak? Maybe she fell out of a truck? There are no industrial facilities in town, but there could be some down...

Found Chicken! (Can anybody identify breed? Clues about age?)

We've had chickens for a little over a year. We live in a small downtown area. Yesterday, somebody asked me if one of chickens had escaped. None of them had. There was chicken running loose in the neighborhood. She had spent a couple of days around the CVS pharmacy before another neighbor with...

Chicken ate plastic and lots of it! Should I be concerned?

So far, so good. There's some loose stools, but nothing too concerning. They're all eating and drinking well. Fingers crossed. Anyone else with this experience? If you are wrapping your coop, use THICK plastic!

Chicken ate plastic and lots of it! Should I be concerned?

I recently decided to enclose part of our run to make the coop space larger. A friend suggested I wrap it in plastic, which would serve as a nice wind breaker. We live in NC on the coast and don't have to worry about the temp getting much lower than about 29F, and usually stays above freezing...

    Aracauna post-mortem. Any ideas?

We're worming the others, but I don't know if that's the issue. Just hoping to find someone with similar experiences. The protruding breastbone is the real head-scratcher for me. Especially after holding her the day before and seeing her eat normally. We do have some mice in the back yard, but...

    Aracauna post-mortem. Any ideas?

One additional bit on info. She didn't die last night. My daughter fed the hens this morning and said Chicken Joe was alive but that she had run right into my daughter and fell over. She died sometime between 11:00am and 4:00pm.

    Aracauna post-mortem. Any ideas?

I lost a hen (Chicken Joe) this morning and was hoping to see if anyone had any thoughts as to what might have done her in. Hatched Feb. 2013. Started laying in June. Smallish, but a good eater. Second from the bottom on the packing order, we had 9 hens. 5 Aracauna mixes all born in February. 4...

When will hens start laying again after a stress event?

If hens stop laying due to a stress event, when will they start back up? A little background: We have five four-month-old pullets (mixed easter-eggers). Someone was giving away 4 two-year-old Dominiques and we decided to take them on. They had been kept with a rooster, but we couldn't take the...

Broken feather (with blood) on feathered foot. Hurts.

Excellent discussion and advice! Performed my first featherdectomy today. Oreo was bleeding from a foot feather, as soon as I pulled it, she stopped bleeding. I'm keeping her in a temporary pen for a bit just to make sure it doesn't start bleeding again and attract attention from the others. So...
