Post Your Nifty Tips and Tricks You've Learned Along the Way that Makes Chicken Keeping Easier

For any folks looking to cool off your birds, in super high heat, recommend a squirrel cage type misting fan. We found a good one off Amazon. I think it’s a lasko brand. It can be used as a regular fan or hooked up to water hose for misting. Our birds won’t get in a wading pool, but they like...

Post Your Nifty Tips and Tricks You've Learned Along the Way that Makes Chicken Keeping Easier

Good for you! We made a simple gravity watered with a plastic waterer bottle, some pecs tubing and 3 sections of copper tubing that we had saved. My hubby put some adapters on the end of the tubing and hooked up the nipples. Put a clay pot dish filled with gravel under it, so if they pooped in...

Buff Orpington laying one egg a day??

I have 9 buffs that just turned a year old. We get at least 6-7 eggs a day and sometimes 8 a day. They are consistent layers… even laid 3-5 eggs a day throughout the winter (sometimes 6) with no artificial light. Our 9 girls supply 4-5 small households. They do have good living conditions and...

Trying to decide which breed or breeds?

I have a flock of 9 buff Orpington hens. They are very docile and affectionate with big personalities! They are curious about all people and are always gentle. Mine just turned a year old and have been laying since this past September. They laid an average of 3-5 eggs consistently through the...

Should you put chickens in coop before severe storms

So glad to receive your feedback! They are so darn smart about so many other things that I was shocked to see them act so dumb 😂 I think silly is definitely the word….and also stubborn! They didn’t want to go in the coop before getting their night night oats!

Should you put chickens in coop before severe storms

Mine have done fine in snow and ice and in 25-30 mph winds with some tarp to shelter them in the run. However, I expected that with rain and 40 mph sustained winds and gusts up to 60 mph they would go in the coop! Not! Gonna have to be prepared to coop them up ahead of storms from now on! Thanks...

Should you put chickens in coop before severe storms

I’m glad I’m not the only one that has observed they need intervention! My husband said that they would be smart enough to get in the coop if it got bad enough. My mom gut said they needed to be rescued 🤨 After all, these are the same chickens that ran under my nightgown to hide from perceived...

Should you put chickens in coop before severe storms

We had severe thunderstorms with 70 mph winds today. My flock of 9, 1 year old hens piled in the corner of their partially covered run, looking panicked. They made no attempt to take shelter in their coop. I tried to put them in the coop, but they kept jumping out ( I have an automatic coop door...

    HELP! BO breathing weirdly!!!

Sounds like maybe your chickens have had respiratory issues. If you have any more such problems, I recommend trying VetRx and following the directions on the bottle. It is carried by tractor supply and may be on Amazon.

5 day old chicken limping, pooping clear and now dropping wing

So sorry to hear about your little chick ☹️ Just saw your post and recalled a similar situation with one of my chicks that came in the mail. All she wanted to do was sleep. I had to actually dip her beak in her water every hour or two to get her to drink. After she would drink, she would begin...
