    IA here

I'm south of Washington! I have a medium sized flock of layers and we're going to be adding some more chicks and a few ducks this spring! I'm very excited. But yeah anyway, you've got a chicken addict neighbor!

teeny tiny question re a teeny tiny egg.....

Is there even a yolk inside? Sometimes chickens lay tiny eggs that dont even have a yolk. If it doesn't have a yolk then it could never become a developed embryo.

What breed and Gender is my bird?

Definitely a cockerel. As for the breed, I have never had cuckoo marans but i'm pretty sure they arent supposed to have green feathers.

Not Sure If You've Got A Pullet Or Cockerel? Click Here! Thread 2

First looks like a cockerel. That's a big comb for 7 wks. I don't know anything about polish but the second one's wattles look pretty red so maybe cockerel. Last looks like a pullet.

Wow, that image tugs at my heart. It has been a quite a while since I walked into a massacre, and that was only seven. I'm sorry for your loss Don't really have any advice as I've never really dealt with predators but I hope you secure your coop and maybe catch the little bugger?

I'm so sorry for your loss Is your coop properly ventilated? She could've had a minor respiratory infection that may have been exasperated by the heat.

How would these mixed breeds turn out?

If any one is interested, these are the results of the mixes. The hatch ended up producing 18 chicks total; I kept 5 and gave the rest to a friend. I gave away the sex link boys immediately. I picked three little black ones with white fronts and two black ones with some red/brown leakage (as...

Help: Hens roosting in nest boxes

If I were you you, I would put a flat top over the nesting boxes to act as a poop board, then put one roost over that. If you still need more roosting room, I'd also put one across what is the back in the first picture. Also, as others said, I would suggest covering up the boxes until they are...

    Free-range backyard tips?

Be aware that silkies are more prone to predators than standard chickens. They can't see as well and aren't as alert to potential threats. But, even with all the risks, I think free ranging is incredibly worth it. It keeps them happy and you get to see them running around your yard. I don't know...

    Winter Time Tips?

I would use a Farm Innovators Utility De-icer. https://www.amazon.com/Farm-Innovators-C-250-Submergible-Aluminum/dp/B001E8X2CA It won't break if the water runs out and it doesn't warm the water, just keeps it from freezing so it saves energy. You can probably use it for their pool too, ducks...
