My coop is a double decker (it was built in the corner of our garage!) it's probably 20 sq. feet... 10 on top, 10 on bottom, with a ramp to go up and down between the levels, and a perch. With the vertical footage (including ramp and perch), my 8 have plenty of room Although, they tend to get...
My americauna got much more friendly after having started laying... her sister... not so much, but she's only given me one egg... still waiting on more... and she has get to display any egg laying behaviors, so I'm thinking the one she did lay was an "accident" lol
I recently had the same problem. I raised the front of my nest boxes, so they aren't able to kick so much of the pine shavings out. Now the eggs are nestled in the pine shavings, safe and sound
I have a few newbie layers, and they really LOVE to kick and scratch around in the boxes before...
I'm sure this has been posted before somewhere, so I'm sorry if it's a repeat!
I just got my ladies in September and haven't had to deal with a molt yet, so I was wondering if, in general, the whole flock molts at around the same time or if it's more of an individual "decision".
WOW! The SECOND crazy lady actually laid today (the next day from our "Hawkeye's" first), too! Completely unexpected! Such a nice surprise! Merry Christmas early!
I guess they really do wait until you stop caring! LOL
I feed my ladies a little scoop of black, oiled sunflower seeds. My girls love it, and a little bit goes a long way. They are rich in protein, and you can get them from a Shoppers Supply or TSC for pretty cheap when you buy it by weight in the paper sacks.
I bet your hens stopped laying because of the newcomers... a little environmental stress can make their egg laying delay for a little bit. I would give them 1-2 weeks to get back on schedule
