This morning when we went to let our chickens out, a year-old black star hen didn't come out of the coop with the others. She was standing in the coop, very listless. We brought her out, and she took a drink of water and then went back in the coop. She's now inside the house in a cage. I gave...
Update: She continued to peck it, and this morning it was bleeding very badly. We found a vet who would see her, and it turned out she had a tumor on her wing that got bumped or pecked or something and burst, causing it to bleed. She had surgery today, and the vet tells me she's doing well and...
Thank you! I went out and bought a crate. I can't get any blukote on her until tonight, when my friend will be home.
What kind of cone works for a chicken? she needs to be able to eat and drink, of course, but not peck her wound.
This morning when we went to get our girls out of the coop, one of our young Black Stars had a big scratch on her wing and was bleeding. She's 6 months old, and started laying a couple weeks ago. We have a Wyandotte who was the bottom of the pecking order until the two black star pullets came...
Hi, all.
I've got 2 chicks that are about 8 weeks old, and 4 adult hens. Right now I'm keeping the chicks in a section of the run that I've blocked off, and the big girls are free ranging as usual. At night the big girls go in the coop and the babies sleep in a dog crate in my dining room...
I'm glad to hear this! I'm raising silkworms for the first time and I have way too many worms to keep up with. I'll raise them til they're a little bigger and then feed the extras to the chickens.
Thanks, all. The apron method sounds very promising. I do have lots of raccoons, and my son saw a huge possum in our yard a few weeks ago.
But our chicken run is surrounded by chicken wire, not hardware mesh. I'm reading that that's a mistake, yes?
So worried that my hens will get killed...
Hello, all.
I'm completely new to this, so forgive me if this is a silly question.
Some of my friends with chickens are very insistent that you have to dig down around the entire run and put chicken wire into the ground. I didn't do that when I set up my run because

Hello, everybody.
I'm adopting four adult chickens from a neighbor some time this week, as soon as we get the run built. We bought a coop off of Craig's List last week. I'm getting two araucanas, one buff orpington, and the fourth is some kind of wyandotte.
I'm excited! And nervous!
I'm...
